I have a 1986 f150 xl 4x4 manual with the 302 and I have been searching for a kit to convert the rear from drum to disc to save a lot of headache and modernize the truck a little bit. Can’t find anything out there for less than 800 that seems to be a reputable brand and has a parking brake. Just wondering if there are any cheaper solutions out there that are plug and play for the most part and fits in the stock 15 inch rim.
there aren’t any kits out there that are compatible with generic pads/rotors? What kind of headaches come with those non oem parts?
An adequate parking brake is a big one. Pushing the rear pad mechanically with the cable, and also letting the brake fluid push the pad all in the same caliper takes a little doing. Those are the ones when you change the rear pads, you need the special tool to fit in the holes in the piston and screw it in to put the new pads in place. Most of the newer trucks with rear discs went with a mini shoe setup inside the rotor for the parking brake.
Do the kits come with modified proportioning valves or adjustable valves?
Thanks everyone for the advice, Ill look into keeping the drums.
The primary issue i ran into with the drums is that our system is plumbed to actuate all 4 brakes together. My rear drums were not initially adjusted tight enough. So when i applied the brakes the fronts lagged until the pressure fed back from the rear. I had plenty of brake at the bottom of the pedal but none on top. Once i adjusted the drums out nice and tight, i had good brakes all the way thru the pedal.
