Please Help! My clutch z-bar has grenaded on me. The tube on the motor side has a large crack on it. I did manage to find another z-bar on a '64 at a salvage yard - but this one's linkage pin is almost worn through. I am going to try to have a local fab shop fix one of them, hopefully they can just replace or repair the pin.
Does anyone know where to get replacement bushings and grease seals? I have read all the posts on this subject, but they are mostly about '65 and up with the plastic bushings. Mine are the split brass ones. I do have four intact bushings, but two are worn down pretty good. If anyone knows a Ford P/N or aftermarket source - please let me know.
GeraldWW, I like your idea of using a chalkboard eraser for the grease seals - do you know if this would work for my application? If I can't find bushings and seals I may just end up using what I have. Thanks.
All the Ford dealers have the Microfiche or a set of old books to look the bushings up. Be persistant when you go there to look them up. I got a set of the brass split bushings not that long ago when I was working in Ford parts. I'm restoring a 50 F-1 and they are the same bushings from the 40's into 1964. My parts books are packed up for a move to a new house, otherwise I'd look up them for you. They can order a package of them for you. if you pay a little extra, they can overnight them for you. I did Ford parts for 20 years and I've heard all the excuses from the kids as to why they can't look them up. It's all B.S.!!
Thanks Barry. There's a Ford dealership next door to my office - I'm going to try this. I did get the z-bar fixed up and looking nice, I hope my repair works out.
Do you know anything about the grease seals (if any) on either end of the shaft? Mine were so shot or non-existent that I don't really know what they're supposed to look like.
It's a felt washer made of the same basic material as a chalk eraser. It's about a 1/2 thick and has a hole that fits over the 2 mounting brackets that the Z bar pivots on. I have some here, but are packed up for my move. You could make 2 if you needed.
Thanks - I ended up using those felt pads that you stick under furniture legs - they seem to work pretty well. I got everything put back together using the four best (out of the eight I had) bushings and everything seems to work pretty well. I'll start hunting down new bushings - I think I can take that ***'y apart in about 10 minutes now.
