P0087 code need some assistance

On the drive from Socal back to AZ I had a dash "warning fuel pressure too low", continued to drive and about 50 miles later when excelarating uphill out of a rest stop the dash code said "reduced engine power" and the CEL came on.
We drove several more miles and at the Joshua Tree exit pulled over and I cleared the code with my IDASH and everything went fine the next several hundred miles to our destination. Today I drove around running errands and no issues.

Should I take it to the dealer and have them check it or wait for it to happen again for?
I took a picture of the code but it did not upload and I don't have it, I'm guessing at the P0087 code because that is what my wife Googled on her phone.
any ideas or advice will be appreciated
thanks

I'm on my phone right now... soo... what year and mileage?;

But saw this;

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...6-7-p0087.html

I know the iDash has PIDs for fuel pressures, like Commanded and Actual, so look into that for a start...

Do research online and different threads will come up. Hopefully somebody with personal experiences and/or a mechanic will chime in...

Okay good place to start would be the DFCM (primary low pressure pump with primary fuel filter) our trucks have that are mounted on the driver's side frame...

Our gen trucks have a PID on the iDash. I heard that these push fuel at 55 PSI. For some reason, my iDash reads higher than that, from the middle 80s to 90 PSI. I don't know if it's the way Banks wrote the PID equation for our gen trucks or mine is high... no idea. I will post a pic of the PID when I find one...

You ever change the fuel filter set yourself?

Yes, I just changed them about 200 miles prior to the trip to California, it drove out with no issues.
I used motorcraft filters.
I'll look at the idash when I get some time in the next few days..

for the OP, checking requested high pressure fuel vs actual will tell you cp4 health. but...if it was supper cold and you dont use anti gel...could be gel in the filters. it doesnt hurt to have the dealer check things...vs you get stuck on the side of the road later.

had the same issue...higher than normal lift pump pressure that would go up with rmps. on my truck it turned out to be cuased by the 2 micron return fillter from my dpk. I switched it to a 4 micron filter and things were normal. maybe one of the reasons why s&s went to a 10 micron return filter. but for my mount thread size...choices are 4 micron absolute or 15 micron absolute / 4 micron nominal. I might switch to the 15/4.

Oh I wish I had your Lift Pump pressure option on my rig. I'll do a mechanical fuel pressure gauge one day.

Ran an errand today and it happened again and I didn't clear the CEL. Started the truck, CEL still on but it drove normal.
temp was mid 80's when it happened the first time and it's around 90 today.

I let my truck tell me when to change my oil, usually at at least 7k miles but usually under 7.5K miles, and change my FD4615 fuel filter set out at the 3rd oil change at those intervals. The factory manual says every 3rd oil change or by 22.5k miles...

By the end of the fuel filters life (prior to changing the filters out at those miles), I would see the fuel pressure drop to the high 70s. With a new set of filters, I'd expect you to see pressure in the 80s like I was.

Now with the install of the S&S DPK, pressure went up for some reason, it's up in the high 80s (I see 90 at times) and does not come out of the 80s but does drop down as the miles click up... which makes sense as the primary filter loads up with particles.

I think you may have a weak DFCM primary pump but maybe have it checked out professionally before replacing it and to rule it out if not...

Well, no one has asked the obvious question yet. Are you sure you got the primary fuel filter bowl seated and tightened correctly the last time you changed the filters? Do you hear the LPFP sucking air? That filter bowl is notoriously finicky on the pre '17 trucks. It has to be tightened exactly until the stops meet. Not tight enough -- it sucks air. Too tight -- it sucks air.

What's the procedure for checking the filter?
I'll check it in the am, it had about 600 miles since the change.

My fuel pressure runs high like that consistently (and has been since I first got the idash 1.8 and before the S&S DPK install) but do not think it's the actual pressure. It must be the way Banks writes the PID software. And I run the 2 micron SNAPP return filter on my S&S DPK. My pressure actually went up when I installed the DPK. No problems since running the DPK since July 2023.

As stated and @F250_Super_4X4 has mentioned before, the factory spec of low pressure is 55PSI for the factory low pressure pump (DFCM). weird that the iDash reads the low pressure supply that high but it is what it is...
