retractable side and rear steps

Hey all,
Has anyone actually ordered the side and rear retractable steps either from the factory? If so, couple of questions.
1) are they placed on both sides? - EDIT, yep, the factory option has both sides..
2) how useful are they? I admit that 10 years ago, I would not need help getting up onto the side steps and corner step cutouts located on the bed and the bumper, but getting my leg up there and then hoisting myself up there today just doesn't seem as easy as it used to be. Especially in winter. I am looking for something to give me a leg up so I can clean off the top of my cap after a snow fall. Since I am getting a long bed this time, the extra 18 inches means I will need something more than opening the door and brushing off the cap, which is what I use today. Brush pretty much maxes out just short of the back on my short bed.
3) how well do they hold up?

1) are they placed on both sides? For example, if I ordered the retractable side step, is it located on both the driver and passenger side? Same would apply to the rear step. Reason I ask is that it appears that ordering on a new vehicle might be cheaper than getting two later

1. You get two when ordered from factory, but they're sold individually in the aftermarket.
2. I don't use them much but I do use them on uneven ground, when the ground is sloping down from the truck position. In the desert with the uneven ground they help.
3. They're made by AMP and were marketed for years as BED STEP 2.

I hear you, we're not as young as we used to be That being said, I ordered the tailgate step on my long bed build, but held off on the additional side steps to see if I indeed need them later (I am not running a bed cap though). From what I saw I can get them from AMP and it is not a difficult install if the side step-up proves to be a problem for me. They ain't cheap for what you get.

Thanks all. When I got my truck in late 2010, I could hop up and down without the tailgate step pretty easy and only my wife used it...now I use it a lot more. Big difference between your mid 30s and early 50s...
I am in the middle of trying to add them to my order, but if not, at least I know I can get them (and cheaper too) direct from AMP...

If you call Real Truck since they own AMP, they don't sell them. You will need to get them from Ford accessories. Lucky I found take-offs.
Just so you know.. The front corner ones don't look great! But they help.

I dunno about that, they sure seem pretty darn willing to sell them to me.....

That must be new. I talked to them the beginning of the year. They said I must go through Ford Accessories.

I ordered the fllip down side bed steps on my 24 Platinum 450, and they are indispensable for getting to the front of the bed easily for someone only 5'9" and not in the best of shape - especially with a long bed.

If you wake up one morning and they are missing, do not come knocking on my door!
That is an option I wish I would have "checked" on my build.

Ha! All you know is that I am in NE Ohio too - and there is at least 1 other 24 glacier gray platinum 450 with those side steps rolling around here as a decoy - because I owned that one before I got a build date and traded it out on this one (after waiting 15 months).
