Hi fellers, new guy here. I recently picked up a 2000 Excursion Limited, 4x4 with the 6.8 v10 with 150k miles.
First superduty after years of driving bullnose/bricknose 250's and 350's - I'm currently in the process of what I call "de-teenagering" it. I got it for a song and dance because it had been monkeyed with so much with that ferocity we all had for our first trucks with a part time paycheck and no real bills. So here I am spending way too much money and my weekends with a really big ship in a bottle putting all the pieces back together and trying to get it back to OEM for the most part (plus all the banks parts he managed to put on it). Expect a lot of me in the future I wager
This week's project: getting rid of the 2005-style projector headlights and install a pair of OEM, including replacing all the connectors that were unceremoniously chopped off to hardwire them, and the header panel.
In the process of modifying the header panel to fit said headlights (with a grinder it looks like) many things were sacrificed in the pursuit of blinding other drivers, one such thing being this cable behind the driver's side headlight. No clue what it does other than it's almost fully severed and looks like it has a couple of conductors in there.
I'm currently away from the vehicle for the week to travel for work, but was hoping to order a replacement for this to be here in time for the coming weekend. So please excuse my "what is this part" posting, but anyone know what this cable is for? I can't seem to find any info on it through google or my Chilton's manual.
Just realized it's probably the hood release cable, D'oh! Guess the last fella routed it a different way when he installed the headlights. Though the hood opens just fine with this mostly severed - the question is do I replace it (which I know is a job that sucks) or just gamble and kick the can down the road.
The inner cable does not appear to be damaged. It should last the lifetime of the truck. The cut in the outer housing will not significatly affect its operation and practically is it not in constant use.
The 2005 style headlights are OEM on the 2005 Excursion and many owners upgrade their headlights to that style. The original headlights do not really light up the road properly and the 05’s were redesigned to provide a better light pattern. It’s possible that the PO did not have the proper bulbs or he did not have them adjusted properly in the new housing. IMHO you might regret going back to the 2000-2004 style. The most important thing is to do the Ex the way you want it, good luck

I appreciate the reply brother! One of the reasons I'm going back to OEM is I like the look of the OEM clear and orange style headlights the best on these <05 rigs. But moreso the previous owner had AlphaRex headlights that were wired improperly, and zip-tied in - the OEM header panel was so destroyed from being modified to fit them that there was no chance of ever aiming them properly. Plus selling those AlphaRex headlights made the truck even cheaper of a purchase effectively
