Transmission bad
Transmission bad
On my 1995 F150 2WD 5 speed 3rd and 4th gears are out. I am thinking on maybe a Tremec 5 or 6 speed. The 6 speed will handle more torque and I am planning to build the 302 up soon so that is why I am thinking about the 6 speed. It will handle up to 700 LB FT of torque. The 5 speed is only 330 LB FT. Another way would be an automatic but shifting is more fun. Any thoughts?
What do you mean 'they are out'? 3 and 4 are on the same shift rail and fork. Forks are known to wear in that unit for some reason, probably from folks resting their hand upon the ****
My pal has the M5OD behind a mild 351W and tows with it, works fine. Truck is an extended cab, long bed, 4x4. I bet the torque rating is for the clutch, not the unit. The S5-47 was rated to 470ftlbs...a mildly tuned 7.3DI can surpass that easily and kill the stock clutch. 13" SMF and it will take way more abuse
A Tremec six speed alone is about $4000, you know this right? Not against it, but going to be a spicy swap.
Toss the 302 and start with a 351W, it does everything better stock.

Seems to be a ton of 302 love lately. Its a wasted block in these trucks though, speaking from experience. 351w or 460 if you can swing it. The torque increase alone is worth the swaps. The 302 is too high of a revving motor be in these trucks. Ford should have never listed it as an option IMO. I would take a 4.9 over a 5.0 any day of the week.
