Hello all, I have a 96 Bronco with the 5.8L, here's what I have going on and would like to do. Currently the truck has 183k miles on it, the engine leaks a lot of oil, it runs well but the coolant has turned rather brown. I would like to find a replacement engine that's upgraded to the 300+ hp range that I could use the stock computer & electronics on (get it tuned etc), I have a travel trailer that I would like the Bronco to be able to pull on ocassion as well. Has anyone come across some good upgraded replacement engine options? The choices seem to be very limited, and most companies have an unknown lead time on what I've came across so far. I'm wondering if ordering a short block and building from there would be a decent option as well. I'm really wanting to make it as easy of a replacement as possible. I'm planning on changing the entire cooling sytem, doing the saginaw steering conversion, replacing all of the engine accessories, vacuum lines and a bunch of other little things as well. If y'all have some good recommendations, I'd love to hear them!
Rebuild your 351 with little head work ,in 96 they pulled trailers with them just fine ,brown water if its kinda brown foam at the cap you have exhaust gases getting in water probably head gasket
I would look at a possible gear change but not sure what you have
Right, they make stroker kits to turn your 351 into a 410
I'd do that with a good machine shop
You can probably do that as cheap as buying a stock reman longblock these days
Agree with above- the way much of the reman engines quality is, I would DEFINITELY keep what I've got and rebuild it...you will be much happier in the short and long term!
Look into crate engines. I got a 331 stroker for around 5k. You'll likely spend around that or more building up your stocker. I went with s and j engines, but almost went with blueprint. Being a 96, your stock computer will be sufficient to run it. I kept the EGR but deleted my thermactor stuff. Keeps the check engine light happy.
i would rebuild what you have, my local bronco gang has done 8 engine swaps and from experience i think you will be happier building the 351 than with any other option or engine , short of going to a 460 for thumpin and jumpin
Thanks for suggesting that company, I filled out their form for a quote and someone reached out quickly. They said a stroker motor won't work well with the stock computer and recommended I use an aftermarket system if I do a stroker motor. They are going to put together a quote for a stroker motor and also an upgraded engine that would still work well with the stock electronics, I'm still waiting to hear back again but I think having something built and ready to go would work out the best for me
