Question Do i need a Cam

i have an 89 F150 5.0 EFI with 93k and i ran it out of oil (oops), replaced the crank and bearings and then drove it the same week from MA to MI, running pretty nice, and on the way back is when it then developed a noisy lifter. i drove it like that for about a month and a friend did the lifters for me, he said that he rolled the pushrods and things looked good.
Now, the lifters are still tappin away and ive got a good skip do to the #6 cylinder isnt grounding out when i used a test light on the cap, even though the plug is getting spark. i would end up bringing it somewhere for a compression test but i want to see if any of this is familiar to someone.

Did i grind away some of a lobe?
Did my friend not do something right?
Does one have to do with the other?
I did the crime and the crank was the time but enough is enough.

Help,
jeff

75% of the time when you think you have a bad lifter, Its your cam lobe that is worn and causing the tapping noise.

If you ran your truck out of oil the first time, Just replacing the crank isnt going to fix your oil consumption problem. Did you check the cylinders for wear? Do the valves?

well you cant beat those odds can you. i was told i needed one but i was hoping they were wrong but considering the noise is around the same place as before the new lifters went in, im guessing your right.
i dont have an oil consumption problem and the lifters didnt make any noise before or after we did the crank bearings until i drove to michigan, then it started. plus i drove it for about a week after the incident with the oil.
What about #6 cylinder. why would it be ok before the new lifters but now its dead??? Could it be something else why that wont react or do you think its still the cam?
Or is it the lobe is bad enough that the valve cant go up enough, would a compression test tell me that?
Thanks for the reply's

alot of times when you just put new lifters on a old cam, The new lifters will not spin in the bore and will wipe out your cam lobe in a hurry. That is why when you tear an engine down, everything gets marked where it belongs. Its like wearing someone elses shoes. They are not formed to your feet and are uncomfortable. Same with mixing and matching moving parts.
