Thank you for putting up that link. I watched it before but after reviewing it again now I have a better understanding. That chamber is before the pump so I guess those pieces just got hung up in there.
Tonight my truck was acting up again with the fuel pressure wildly jumping around and then wouldn't come above 55psi. Also had to start from under the hood again. Then later it started fine and fuel pressure was good.
Not going to drive it any more until I can go through the wiring.
The videos are great and nicely detailed. I've been bouncing between so many different projects I haven't had much time to focus on this and just been working on my truck in between. Now I'm getting a little concerned about the wiring because it seems to have gotten worse.
Should have some time tonight to start looking at the engine harness and the connections bismic mentioned a few posts back.
There are several critical circuits that can commonly impact the PCM supplied power:
Fan and/or clutch wiring/connector
IPR and/or wiring/connector
GPCM and/or wiring/connectors
EGR and/or wiring/connectors
Look at the connectors and wiring on/to those components first.
Went through these connections and MAF tonight. All good but the EGR insulation breaches on 3 wires although they looked far enough apart to not contact each other. Opened the harness up 6-8 inches and that all looked good. Taped up the bad areas for now. Looking into a new connector.
Took another test drive and it was fine with no issues. It's only one drive so we'll see over the next few days.
Replaced the fuel line from the pickup to the HFCM with a fuel hose over the weekend.
Also cleaned out the hose from the fuel bowl to fuel pressure sensor. It was pretty gunked up with old diesel fuel. Honestly I'm surprised it was getting a reading at all and wondering how accurate it even was. Here is a picture of some of what came out while cycling the fuel pump.
On the upside I learned a lot about the fuel system and troubleshooting. And with basically a new fuel system now should be good for a long time.
Fuel pressure been holding steady. No swinging gauge needle and it's been running 60-70 depending on acceleration.
Thank you Jack - Toomanytoys and bismic - Mark I think for your help and ideas to fix it.
