Wondering if anyone might have some direction for me. My odometer has stopped working on the 1975 f250. Speedo works fine. Looking for ideas on a plan of attack before I start opening stuff up. Thanks again for any direction.
If the speedo did not work I would suggest a end of the cable drive gear, or time for a new cable. But if it is just the odometer, then I guess it is an internal issue with the speedo/odometer assembly.
FYI when you remove the instrument cluster and get to taking the speedo/odometer assembly apart. I believe there are some anti take apart hdwr things that prevent or at least slow you down getting into the odometer part. So the ol sketch car lot could not easily roll back the mileage, back in the day.
Maybe reach out to the seller and see it THEY are the actual ones that refurbish them. Maybe they can repair yours? Or make a suggestion on what you can check.
I picked up a spare years ago in a truck I was scavenging for other stuff, guy said take what you want, but leave the truck, $100. Was in the 1980s, $100 bought more gas. I figure if ever needed, can record my last reading of old and current reading of spare, and just be straight about it, even write it inside a secure place.
Yes, time for a new speedo head
Might be able to send it to speedo-tach for repair but I doubt they will fix an old one
Never been able to repair one myself, you could be the first
Probably just a broken little gear in there
The rotating magnets for the speedo needle are the delicate parts
Those ODO gears are up above those rotating magnets, and maybe somebody tried turning the ODO back and did not get the gears and numbers lined back up correctly
So, I'd at least remove the cluster and the speedo for inspection and possible repair before trying to find another one
Thanks Manic. I'll pull it and check, but just might be easiest to pop another working unit in. The one 77&79 found looks good. I want to replace the clear plastic cover anyway. Might be time to do it all. Thanks y'all.
The one posted above (on eBay) is most likely incorrect for your 1975 F250. Your original speedo goes to 100 MPH, the eBay one goes to 85 MPH, & is correct for 77-79 trucks.
I do have a 100 MPH speedo. It has been oiled (I use a light synthetic oil) at all the bearing points, the needle painted, & test run for 15 minutes. Speedo works, odometer works. Face is a little dusty. $50 + shipping.
Some 100 MPH speedo's have the high beam light right above the 50, others don't have it as the "bright" light was to the right side of the cluster. The one I have has the indicator above the 50, it will work with either style.
