My 96 f250 has developed a weird clacking sound that is coming from the bell housing area. It stops or at least appears to go away when in gear and especially when driving but at idle it sounds horrendous. Haven’t noticed any issues with shifting or anything. Dropped the pan today and it’s clean some build up on the magnet but nothing crazy.
Got the transmission down and I am surprised the flexplate appears to be fine. Considering how loud this clank is I don’t believe the flexplate was causing this. Could it be the torque converter? I put the input shaft in the TC and turned it and I don’t hear anything unusual.
That flex plate looks like it wasnt tight on a few bolts with the clean metal rubbing
Were all the bolts hard to break free or feel the same?
crap… that makes sense. No I think The torque converter bolts were coming loose. I did this install before I don’t believe I torque down those bolts. I’ve got blue thread locker and a quality torque wrench. Just got the trans installed today. Few more things to do.
