1990 F150 with 302 and AOD. And yes, the fan is mechanically driven. My apologies for poor phrasing before, I was in a bit of a rush, I was trying to say the fan speed was surging intermittently.
Found either the issue or a further symptom. This lil guy blew up. In all transparency, no idea what this component is, updating here and will look around google after. Small text stamp is 98914 and large text stamp is 5101FG. Circuit board is stamped 06.
It’s a transistor. Wonder why it blew.. if you know how to rebuild that stuff, you can buy them and replace. If you do it yourself, replace the capacitors on the board no matter what!
Replaced the Mofset and caps, reinstalled, and so far so good! No CEL, idles fine. I'm waiting for decent weather before a test drive, just in case the blown mofset was just a symptom of another root issue. Made sure to get spares just in case. As an afterthought, not sure why I held the mofset in place with epoxy instead of tape when soldering. Mofset specs are the closest match I could find, we'll see if it lasts. Part#IRF730PBF-ND
