Background, the transmission has been fully rebuilt and I went to start the truck, this connection smoked and melted.
Hello, I am trying to figure out why this connection is melting. It looks like a cable that is coming from the starter is melting it. The starter does turn, but the truck does not turn over. It would heat up rapidly to smoking when I tried to turn over the engine.
Might mark on your picture which wires. In most cases wires smoke and connectors melt due to high resistance connections or excessive current demands. How fast does the starter actually turn? Your issue maybe as simple as a bad starter. Have you looked at this link? starter
If that is the connection I think it is, the two larger wires on the right go to the glow plugs. That is a known weakness in the harness, the plastic will melt and there won't be a good connection there. You can cut them out of the connector and find a way to bypass it. I think some people just cut the connectors from the glow plug wires and use a butt connector on them.
Since those wires go to the glow plugs, the glow plugs aren't working right and that is why you're having trouble starting the engine. Make sure you fully charge up the batteries while fixing the wiring and see if that helps.

Have you looked into getting a Ford service manual for your year? Seems they are available on ebay in several formats, book and CD. I'd check there or possibly used book stores in your area.
