so i went to check the oil and pulled the hood latch under the dash, hood popped up, did my checks and closed the hood- the hood bounced and didnt latch. i tried several times to no avail. i manually pushed the catch over with the hood up and it wouldnt latch. i am not sure if this is a cable issue or a latch issue.
how to troubleshoot this? do i remove the cable and see if the latch itself catches or.......
i dont think the cable broke when i pulled it and if it did i think the latch would catch and not release....... but ive never had a latch not latch either......
if its the latch is there something to look at to repair or is this just a replace situation?
Grease the latch first? Spray some lithium grease around and pray?
I’ve gotten out of a couple of jams where the latch won’t latch doing just that.
sorry- i should have mentioned- i sprayed down with wd40 liberally and cleaned the gunk off the latch and excercised it will lubing to no avail on it actually latching-
the latch rotates over just doesnt lock down...........
Did you make sure you didn't leave the oil fill cap or radiator cap or something on the core support, preventing the hood from being able to close fully?
If so, check to see if the hood release lever is pushing the cable back. Maybe the cable is frozen or otherwise corroded inside the sleeve and effectively keeping the latch in the release state.

thanks= i will check- this is a 2 person task? i to pull handle and 1 to watch latch?
Certainly easier with two people and having 1 watch the latch, but if it's just you to start with you could check the underside of the hood release lever in the cab to see if the cable is snug or loose. If loose, step 2 could be to have a second person watching the cable at the actual latch end.
