Heat issues

My 2013 recently has started to randomly blow cold air out the heat ducts. Happens more frequently idling but will also do it going down the road. It’ll be fine and then all of a sudden you feel the temp change. Sometimes you can just turn the climate control off for a minute and turn it back on and it returns to normal. Other times you have to shut the truck off and when you restart it’s all good again. I’m thinking it’s electronic and leaning towards a bad actuator on the heater box somewhere. Anyone experienced this? Thanks for any help.

I am having a similar issue with my ‘13. What I notice is that the truck will blow warm air until the conditions are met to turn the supplemental cab heater off. At that point, the regular heat system takes over. For me, the passenger side will blow warm air but the drivers side is all over the place. If I use the dual climate and crank the drivers side hot, then it will blow hot air.

Using ForScan Lite (phone version) and an AC vent thermometer, I isolated the problem to what I believe is a failed LH (lower) temperature blend actuator. I have not torn the dash apart to replace it yet but I am fairly certain that is the problem.

You can use ForScan to monitor the electrical signals for the actuators. On my truck, the RH actuator signal is smooth and consistent, the LH signal jumps all over the place.

You might start there.

Thanks for the info. Wonder if I’m able to look at the actuator with my snap on scanner. If not I’ll look into forscan. Also does anyone know how the climate control pulls temperature readings? Curious if that’s sensors acting erratic

Outside air temp sensor is in the mirror
Inside air temp sensor is in the dash, small grate to the right of the steering column.

All of these sensors can be read with ForScan. No idea about the snapon scanner. Only way to know is to try it.

This article may give you more insight.

Most likely cause is the temp blend actuator.
This video gives info into the cause of the failure.
