I just bought a 99 v10 F-350 drw 4x4 w/ 90K on it. When I got the truck it had some engine noise, which all I have fixed by the advise I have gotten from this site. Now I have 93k and the engine started to knock. But here's the deal 1st thing in the morning when I start the engine all is normal and sounds great. After 2 min or so I will start to here a knock, kind of loud. after 30 sec it stops for a few sec and comes back. this continues on for 10 min or more until the engine is good and warm. I changed the oil (motorcraft filter & mobil 1 5w30) No change. The sound seems to be from the drivers side of the engine top to middle of engine. any advice would be great
Good guestion. It kind of sounds like a lifter trying to pump up. I am not 100% on the location of the noise because when I crawl under the truck I here it all around (ECHOING). Does the balance shaft move anything or just rotate?

Based on your description of the noise, it sure sounds like piston slap. I was under the impression that if you had it, it was present from the beginning. But maybe that is not the case since it sounds awfully familiar to me. I went to Mobil 1 10W-30 and that seemed to quiet my noise almost completely but that doesn't mean it will work in every single case. I would have bet good money that my noise was a lifter trying to pump up and was in major denial for months until I was convinced that it was indeed, piston slap. The good news is piston slap is reputably not harmful and will not destroy your engine internals, for whatever that is worth. The balance shaft just rotates, it spins at double the crank speed from what I've been told. I would doubt this is your problem though.
Thanks for the feed back. I am thinking piston slap too. I love the truck and it runs like a dream. I just dont want to throw a rod pulling my rig across country. What about a loose Spark plug?

I doubt it could be a loose plug, but then anything is possible. The mod motors have had the rare 'spark-plug launching' problem once in a while since there are only a few threads holding the plugs in. But you would know it I think if that were the case. It couldn't hurt to check the torque of your plugs. Actually you're about due for replacement so since you'll be checking anyway, might as well replace them. BE SURE you use some assembly lube, to get correct torque on the plugs an to prevent galling of the aluminum from the steel plug. $5 of thread lube will possibly prevent thousands of dollars of head repair/replacement.
Ford says piston slap is not harmful and won't affect the life or driveability of your truck in any way, but then they have to say that don't they ? Or risk repairing/replacing thousands of V-10. I love my Fords, but the company is not my favorite.
The balancer just rotates, but throws a lot of weight around, they can knock, although I have no personal experience with it in a V10. I used to visit my machinist's shop twice a week when I was driving a truck for a while, and he always had some little 60 degree V6 or something with a bad balancer bearing getting worked on.
If someone else who has piston slap says that this sounds like it, believe them. I have some ticking in my '97 Cougar 4.6L (and a low-end startup noise) since new, which I am assuming is the good ole piston-slap. Never changes, but I've only 17K miles on it. I beat on it for an hour, and the ticking goes away for weeks at a time. I always thought the ticking was a lifter. Still do...
The low-end noise I have is something else, and always does it on a cold startup no more then 2-3 times and then doesn't come back until the next cold start - doesn't matter what the outside temp is either...
I think you and I Have the same noise. I am not going to worry about it. I sure wish I knew what kind of oil they were running in it before I changed it. It was much quieter. I going to install a remote start system that way the truck will be warm, quiet and ready to go before I get out there. I called a ford dealer just to see how much a new engine would be.( just in case)and around 5k installed not too bad for how much truck I have and the price I got it for. (F350 4x4 Crew Cab DRW fully loaded) I am sure it will go another100K + more.

Mobil 1 10W-30 quieted my piston slap right down, I tried quite a few other oils and viscosities. I am planning on 200K miles at least, just like my last Ford.
