Fuel pump differences

I am working on my son's 1993 F150 4X4 with 300 6 and dual tanks and a 5 speed. Rear tank is dead and leaking. I have a replacement tank salvaged from another F150. I am going to lift the bed to replace the tank and while its up I will install a new fuel pump on the front tank as the fuel gauge isn't working and I know it's probably on its last legs anyway (truck sat basically unused for 10 years). I have attempted to order a couple fuel pumps already - both sellers accepted the order then messaged back and asked that I send VIN number (2FTEF14Y4PCA88287) to confirm fit - both times they said the fuel pump would not fit and cancelled the orders. What is the difference in fuel pumps on these trucks - even within the same year?

I can understand a short bed having a smaller front fuel tank, but I would think all rear tanks would be the same. And even if they are smaller - I would think it would have to do with the length or width of the tank and the depth would be the same.

If you got another tank, I am assuming that has the pump in it. Can't you find the part number on the original part?

Is replacing just the pump an option for you? If the stock stuff still looks/tests good, I would reuse those part [swapping only the pump]. I believe pumps are maintenance items so I would replace the pump no matter what.

Tank came from a 1991 truck and the fuel pump was tossed immediately after pulling the tank. The replacement tank had some really old gas in it and stank up the shop the second it the pump seal was cracked open. It's taken several washes and shaken with agitators (old nuts) to clean up.

I'm not a Ford expert but I do believe how they switch tanks and how the right fuel goes back to the right tank is different.

Someone that knows will chime in.

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with a used tank these days - a brand-new replacement tank is around $100 or less.

I had to change the front tank/pump/sender in my '95 after I brought it up from rust-free Florida. Mine had sat in a storage lot for years, and that tank was nasty inside. Smelled like turpentine. I drove the truck 1100 miles using the rear tank only, at 150 miles/tankful. That many fuel stops made for a looooong trip!. My previous F250, I replaced my rusted front tank from underneath and it was a PITA and ended up butchering one of the quick-connect fittings, forcing me to buy the last OEM replacement set in the country ($250). This time I took the bed off, for much better access to the fittings and whatnot. I replaced both pump/sender assemblies, just because, as well as a new Spectra Premium front tank.

I agree. I replaced my rear tank a few months ago and it was $115 brand new, with shipping.

I replaced it from underneath. It was definitely a PITA, but I got it done. Next time, I'll look into removing the bed.

There were single rear tanks available as an option… 17 gallon as I recall.

They said the fuel pump did not fit the front, rear or both?

Tank size and depth
Ford parts used to always ask us the capacity in gallons of the tank, and of course we did not right off, know that
If you put the shorter module in the deeper tank, it would read wrong and run out of gas before the tank was empty
And the deeper, longer pump would not fit into the shallower tank

Just as a data point, I recently changed the pump in a 95 F250 4x4 with the 18.2 gallon rear tank. I used the TRQ FPA84930 pump. It went in fine. Judging by My4FordTrucks image, you should have the same 18.2 gallon, no? RockAuto seems to agree, as well.

Let us know what you find!

Looks like I need to just order off Rock Auto - they include the tank description with their fuel pump offerings. I usually buy parts off Ebay but finding the correct one is delaying the process.
