Got a new noise on my new-to-me '90 F-150 with 302, wondering about options for performance rebuilds specific to trucks. I'm thinking the engine will eventually need rebuilt and would love better performance but I don't want a streetcar build in the truck. The truck needs to behave like a truck--i.e., low-end torque and pulling power out of this 302....not high-RPM power.
Curious about options. I know Jasper sells reman engines with varying levels of performance but I'm not sure about any of them in a truck application. Eventual engine rebuild/replacement was part of the plan when I bought the truck.
Ah, yes, good question. I have zero time to do this myself, given my job and farm business and family stuff...so that's a big consideration.
Budget...labor included...probably on the order of $7k to $10k including a suitable AOD rebuild since I cannot trust that the original AOD (160,000+ miles) would hold up to more power and normal pickup type uses (towing/hauling). I am guessing that keeps me in crate territory for engine/transmission from a national provider, and pretty close to stock.
I understand being busy, is buying another block and building it when you can an option? Create motor and labor for someone to install probably won’t get your trans done with that budget.
remanned basic AOD looks to be $2k.

What new noise? A bad pulley bearing doesn’t seem like a good reason to spend thousands of dollars on a new engine.
Use the search function in the upper right corner to find 302/ 5.0L engine rebuilds or performance upgrades. There is also an engine forum full of threads. You can port the current E7 head or buy better heads. A mild cam upgrade can help and still be speed density friendly. Better flowing exhaust should be a part of the budget. Are you going to keep the factory EFI system with the OEM computer or use an aftermarket computer? An aftermarket EFI system is also an option.

For low end power, you would probably be better off getting a 351W block. Check with a local builder to see what they would charge to build an engine for you. A stock long block from a local parts store would cost you about $3k and probably won't be put together as well as one that is built by a reputable builder. Add the cost of an intake, distributor, new sensors and anything else that may be required and you will get an idea of how much farther you may want to go with it.
Thanks, everyone. I'll talk to my mechanic...fixing (if possible) is preferred, so that I can address other unknowns with this used truck and ensure no breakdowns on the road from the basics... I'll post back what I find out if I can get him out here to give this a listen.
