6.9 idi dying after warmup

Alright so my 6.9 was running great until last Saturday, left home took it to a fuel station got some diesel then about 5 minutes after I left I felt it shake and stutter, then i pushed clutch in and it died, I stopped and it started right back up, drove another mile and it did it again, but after that it drove 20 miles no issue. On the way home it got so bad where I didn’t wanna kill my started by keeping starting it ever my so I parked it. Came back and replaced the fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump with a 3/8 hose, started and ran like a top….. until I got about 10 minutes down the road and i had it to the floor and it would not go over 40mph and kept trying to shutoff. Although not as bad. I feel like it’s sucking air cause when I press the Schaeder valve on the fuel filter housing there’s a bit of air that comes out, any one have any ideas what could cause this? Fuel pump I replaced about 3000 miles ago, return lines seem fine? I wouldn’t think they would effect high rpm’s tho. Any help is greatly appreciated

Is it possible you got bad fuel? Is the station a name brand high volume station or the back road country store?

I've got bad fuel that acted the same way before. Really, really, low on power and missing. It points to bad fuel because it happened right after leaving the fuel station, so. You might want to just start there; draining the tank or adding a lot of diesel 911, ATF, Oil etc. to help boost the btu's in the fuel enough to run and burn it up.

Do you still have the stock fuel water separator? If so you can pull up the ring and dump any water trapped in it. It's located on the driver's side near the hood hinge. Famous for air intrusion and many have been bypassed. The screw on fuel filter will hold quite a bit of water too. Replace if you find water in your fuel. You can snake a small diameter hose straight down the filler hose into the tank sump and sample your fuel. Water is heavier than diesel. Use a cheap hand pump to extract some fuel for a look see.

my water separator I bypassed when I first got the truck, I just pulled the bed off because I have been planning on putting a gooseneck hitch in and building a flatbed, when I pulled it off I blew into the tank vent for craps and giggles…. It was clogged… I’m guessing it was running good for the first 10 minutes cause it could still pump, and then right when it pulled a vacuum it staved it, which is why I wasn’t seeing much pressure at the schreader valve, and the noise I thought was air coming out of the valve when I pushed it was probably air getting sucked in to equalize?

When ever I have bled the Schrader I get bubbles of fuel with any air followed by a good stream of just fuel.

I have two tanks. I have run a tank dry on a couple occasions. Both times I was by myself away from home. I managed to get to the shoulder ok. But you can't crank and bleed at the same time. I switched tanks and with a few cranks and some wait time between tries to rest the battery I was able to run fuel through the filter, IP and injectors and start the engine. The IDI will self bleed as long as there's no air intrusion anywhere.
