2020 failed coyote

Son has a 2020 F150 with 5.0, 2WD. Excessive oil consumption. Dealer says it needs a new engine. We are pretty mechanically inclined (rebuilt a 1996 351W)... just know it'll be a PITA. Any suggestions here? Buy a used motor and hope for the best? Buy a short block and use all the other parts? Send it off a cliff?

The oil consumption problem is a known and extremely common issue that ford never really fixed. The only thing you can do to mitigate the issue is to put a new Ford long block in. It can be done without pulling the cab but that's the easiest way to replace it. Ford bills it out at over 20hrs if I recall and it is a giant pain in the ***. My opinion though as a former owner of one of these piles is dump a used motor in it and ship it down the road. My 18 went through 3 engines in 15k miles and the 3rd one I put in still had severe valvetrain clatter and was using oil. It got replaced with a F250 6.2.

I think for the time being I'm just going to have him dump oil into it until it dies. If we have to replace the motor anyway, may as well get as much mileage out of this one as we can

Just be careful that pushing all that oil thru the engine doesn't end up trashing the cats. If you live in a state that does emissions testing that could be a problem.

They are already trashed, so will just have to replace them before next emissions.

My 2020 F150 4x4, 5.0 engine had the same issue. I found out that it had a technical service bulletin and recommended a PCM software update, replacement of the engine oil level indicator, and oil and filter change to mitigate the issue. I took it to a dealer and had this performed and seems to have helped. I know the service manager pretty well and he said he had done the same thing to his son's F150 plus numerous others. Hope this helps.

I’d read about that and discussed it with the service manager. I guess they figured since it was consuming so much that it wouldn’t help. 🤷‍♂️

I’ve had issues like this before with used vehicles. The first thing I would try is a quart
of Marvel Mystery Oil when adding makeup oil, then drive it hard (not abusive) for several hundred miles. The hope is that someone babied the engine and/or under maintained it, causing some sludging and/or carbon build up. The higher RPMs and temps of running it harder, combined with MMO, will help clean the engine out and hopefully free stuck rings so that oil burning will slow or stop. Change the oil and filter, go with 5w30 or 0w40, replace the spark plugs and PCV valve afterward.

If the oil consumption doesn’t improve, it didn’t cost much to try. I revived many engines that way in my younger and more hungry days.

It wouldn’t help one bit. The dipstick is marked differently and I’m sure the oil life monitor is set to a lower oil change interval just to give the appearance of less oil loss.

I saw somewhere that at the oil change they put on lucas oil Stabilizer and were able to get a lot more miles.on their engine. But I can't find it now to link to.
Just a thought
