[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Dec-02 AT 01:01 AM (EST)]I fired up my truck today and started driving and noticed that the truck was misfiring like crazy, at slow speeds and fast. My first thought that it might have bad fuel or something. Took it to the Ford Dealer (only one within 150 miles) and they thought that it might be a shorted coil pack. After they put it on the computer they said they think it is the fuel sensor module. The sensor that tells if you have gasoline or methanol in the tank. They are going to order one and put it on my truck when it comes in.
2 questions:
Is this correct and is it a common problem?
Will it hurt my engine if I drive it until the part comes in? The dealer said that it shouldn't, but who knows? I'm thinking of leaving it parked and changing out the fuel filter while I wait for the part.
>After they put it on the computer they said they think it is the fuel sensor module. The sensor that tells if you have gasoline or methanol in the tank.
Ive never heard of that sensor. Maybe they were talking about the Pressure Regulator?
Filter should be changed at 30K.
Did your truck's computer set the Check Engine light?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Dec-02 AT 10:37 AM (EST)]No such named sensor as monsta stated !
There must have been a code stored ! (well maybe a code stored)
let me list all sensors used on the v-10
Knock sensor
tps sensor(throttle pos.)
Maf sensor(airflow sensor)
2 O2 sensors
IAT sensor (intake air temp sensor)this one could cause a problem with misfire it controls spark timing and fuel delivery calibration and egr control! This sensor has a big job to do with how the PCM keeps your engine running!!!!!!!!!!!!I should say if this one shows problems it will screw up the whole picture in the PCM capabilites to control engine, also Maf and tps and oss combine to give you your smooth running v-10 .the o2 are part but not big part, that I know of!
cylinder head temp sensor
OSS output shaft sensor of the tranny
Living in alaska what happened to be the temp outside when your problem ocurred?
I hate conviences an these new advances in technology!
Thanks for the reply's, to clarify they called it an "Alternative fuel module" Supposedly it senses what type of fuel you are using. All I know is that they ordered the part and it should be here next week. I'll be without transportation until then as Ford doesn't cover rental cars while you wait for parts. Several of my previous vehicles did. Make me rethink the extended warranty thing though. The part is $290 and another $100-200 to put it on, that's close to $500, which is 1/3 the cost of an after market warranty. Could pay for itself if I have several $500+++ part to fix later.
I'll tell ya if this part fixes my stuttering truck.
Tony in Alaska
p.s. temp was up around 45 degrees, not very cold. I'm in SE Alaska, mostly rain vice snow.
You must be out of warranty I take it then !
still don't see that name for any module used in my books.
Interesting ! this vehicle isn't setup to run propane is it?
Nah !
On my way home from the dealer the truck was mis firing so bad that it was shaking the truck, then the "service engine soon" light came on. I turned around took the truck back to the dealer and watched while he hooked up a code scanner to it. All the readout said was "random misfire" I told the guy that I could have told him that much. Well anyway, I told him that they could keep the truck until they figure out what is wrong with it. I'm riding with the wife until then in her Windstar.....nooooooo not the mini-van!!
Forty: truck is still under warranty, but I had been thinking of getting an extended warranty that costs approx $1500, I decided against it, but may rethink that if I continue to have problems down the road.
I really thought that the wife's windstar would bite it before my F250, I only have 20,000 miles on it, hopefully they fix it soon and it doesn't have anymore troubles. Engine problems are bad.
Oh I thought by your post ,that they were charging you for parts and labor for this.
Waxy made a good point about chking your spark plugs !
extended warranties aren't worth it for me !
No No not the windstar!
gee liked to see a pic of that part they change or at least the part #
so I can run it past my parts friend at my dealer!
hope your not to long without the truck!
This may be off the beaten path...but I had a silimar problem on my '90 F-250. It would run great, then you would stop, then restart later on and it would mis, buck, jump, jerk and so on. Then one night, I thought I heard an arcing sound....pulled into a dark area and sure enough, one of my plug wires was arcing against the block. I went to the Ford store and picked up a set of genuine Ford wires. BTW, the wires that were on there were from a local parts store and NOT Ford. These wires had few miles on them and were already breaking down. It does pay to spend a little more for better quality. You can also check your wires individually with an ohm meter. I am not exactly sure what the resistances should be....but FortyFords may be able to answer that for you.....maybe this will solve your problem????

Truck is still in the shop and they don't know what is making the engine mis fire. They said that the coil packs are fine and that the computer is not telling them what is wrong. It doesn't help that this is a small dealer that doesn't have a whole lot of talent on staff. This is also the only Ford Dealer within the area (I'm on a island in SE Alaska).
What are my options, what if they don't find the problem?? I guess that I am over reacting, but it's getting old not having my truck. I went to the dealership last night to look at my truck, it sure is nice. But if they don't find a cure for what's ailing it, it'll find it's way to truck heaven. Hopefully not though....
Any thoughts?? I'm not a mechanic, that's why my truck is at the Dealer. I just hope the get it fixed and running right.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Dec-02 AT 11:31 PM (EST)]Did they replace that part they talked about?
I'm going to take a guess at it being one of these sensors !
(Cmp)Camshaft position sensor- this sensor sends a signal to the (pcm)
powertrain Control Module indicating the position of the camshaft, used for fuel synchronization an coil firing.
(Ckp) Crank shaft position sensor- this sensor sends a signal to the (pcm) indication the position of the crankshaft, used to calculating spark timing!
Tony when you drove your truck ,was there any backfiring or just like it was not running on all 10? Poping or were all your indicator
lights and guages normal! besides the chk eng light !
Their options are to get the Ford Hot line involved with your truck!
They have access to ford eng directly to help them fix your truck !
Let me know what happens Tony !
Sorry I couldn'be more help to you!
Its hard to fix them through the internet!
