well the general rule of thumb in this case would be you get what you pay for. some have had luck with cheaper headers but not to many. jba, gibson, bassini, edelbrock all make good headers. the key is the header flange being plenty thick so that the headers dont warp and then leak. most people also prefer shorties due to there ease of installation and being able to retain there stock Y pipe. Long tube headers work but can have fittment issues and require more extensive exhaust work done. do a search and you will find plenty of info on this forum
Go with shorties trust me on this, i had a realllllllllllllly bad experience with long tube. I also didn't want to spend a huge amout of money on headers, so i went with summit raceing shorties. They were great, and copper gauskets
I just put a set of Hedman shorties on my '87 when I rebuilt the motor. I haven't got it tuned yet so I don't know if they make a difference. I am pleased with the headers though, they have a single flange that bolts to the head instead of individuals, but the ball flange on the end will not fit the stock y-pipe. I like this b/c I had some extra pieces of 2 1/2" pipe laying around and decided to make my own. Anyway you can get them out of the P.A.W catalog or I can get the part number for your application.
