I checked on my 86 and there is no fusible link, but there is a fuse that is down in your fusebox under the drivers side dash. I bet thats not the problem, though. Although, you never know. The next thing they told us that goes out is the motor on the transfer case. Try checking a few more posts. You may be able to just clean it first, before blowing a lot of money. Angel
Thanks Angel,
I'll look for a blown fuse tonight. I sure hope that's it because I really don't wanna crawl under the truck and take the transfer case out. I'm not necessarily worried about the job, its just that I moved here from MS in October and its too dad goned cold here to be working on something right now (I know I'm a wus).
I think I've read everything posted in the last year about auto 4 wheel drive
Hi folks me again,
Fuse #6 was OK, looks like I'm going to be tearing into my transfer case soon. Has anyone had transfer case troubles be the problem when they get absolutely nothing when hitting the button? I get no relay clicking at all.
On mine I can hear the clicking in the 4X4 module that sits in the dash. I have a double wire going into a connector laying under the transfer case and I cannot find where it goes. It's one blue wire and one blue wire with green stripe. Anyone know what these wires are for?
I have. Mine and my roomates. His made no noise. On both it was the Transfer Case Shift Motor. It takes an hour to take it off and clean it out good. This is a Very Common problem on trucks that don't get used much. That is what the mechanic told me when I took mine in to be fixed, he told me I could save the labor and do it myself if I wanted to and I did. It has worked fine now for a year and a half since then.
Thanks folks,
I'm gonna tear into it after I get back from visiting the parental units in West Virginia. The bronco belonged to a friend and his daughter drove it. It was in Mississippi and had been setting for awhile when I got it. So, the gummed up shift motor sounds like what I'm looking at now.
Hi everyone,
Well I topok the shift motor off today, took it apart, cleaned it, lubed it, put it all back together and reinstalled. Still nothing. No clicks, its like I'm doing nothing when I hit the button. Any other thoughts? I'm about to take it to a transmission place, as much as that scares me...
Hey folks,
Just wanted to update you, in case you've been following this link. I cleaned up the shift motor last weekend, no help. I gave up and took it to a shop. The mechanic is saying that its the switch on the overhead console that's bad. Its supposed to be all fixed today for 143 bucks. We'll see...
Thanks Angel,
An update to the update, as ya'll know these switches are no longer available. The mechanic found a used one. I picked it up yesterday and the 4WD works now. Bring on the snow!!!
It wasn't as bad as I was expecting 118 bucks parts and labor. The original estimate (with a new switch) was 143. I'll take that
Its kinda funny I never had a 4WD vehicle at all until I was 28 years old. I got along just fine (wasn't quite as far north though). Ever since I found out the 4WD on the Bronco wasn't working I've been nervous as all get out.
I'm 31 years old now, and I got this truck three years ago(would've made me 28). Up until that time, I had all front wheel drive vehicles and I did fine. I actually never even considered 4wd. My husband got a Bronco 2 one day, and I loved it. I got one the next week, and away went the car. The first winter, I remember wondering why I'd even want to use the 4wd. We got some snow, and I turned it on just to see. Now I don't know what I'd ever do without it. Many say 4wd isn't any better than regular, but it is! They say 4wd doesnt make a difference on ice, and they're right! That's why you stay in the snow on the road when you stop. Some say I'm crazy, but you know what? I'll pay a little more for less gas mileage as long as the first time we have a good snow, I have my 4wd. Take care. Angel
