Phasers and Timing
I posted here the other day about my truck quitting on me and the mechanic thinks its a timing issue. The truck will idle just fine but when you give it gas it starts missing like crazy. I ordered the Melling timing chain/phaser kit and he is going to replace all that next week, but I got to thinking after I ordered it. With the 5.4 being an interference engine, if the timing has jumped bad enough that I've got a misfire on 2-3 cylinders didn't a cylinder more than likely hit a valve? Or is it possible that the timing is off just enough to cause the misfires but there is still valve clearance?

I'm theorozing here, but it doesn't seem like a cam phaser would be designed to allow piston to valve contact without a catastrophic failure or possibly the addition of badly stretched timing chains, etc.
