Aftermarket tune on the 7.3?

Has anyone had any positive experience tuning the 7.3? I know there is support for the 23+ trucks now and was thinking of going down the rabbit hole.

We tow a travel trailer currently but looking to upgrade to a 5th wheel (~12k loaded) soon and seeing if it’s worth the upgrade or not.

I wouldn't mess with what already seems like a fragile engine.

This is the first I have ever heard of it being fragile. They are extremely well built engines.

Been thinking on it, Five star and HPT.

My deal is the damn pedal mapping and the trans downshifting. In traffic it’s way slow, like too slow to react. I usually lock out gears to keep RPM up. The short shifting and super low rpm when left in 10th, pulling my hill at <1600 rpm get on my nerves.

It’s 445ci motor, we did not buy it for Prius economy. The trans & engine tuning leave a lot on the table.

Drop the accessory drive belt off and 500hp stock, I’ll take my super sized LS over any gas powered truck any day.

62k and she’s stonger than a mothers love, doesn’t use a drop of oil between 8k changes. We have newer DI GM V8’s and they eat 1 quart every 3k or so.

IMO, the 7.3 has been the best thing about the truck.

agreed. Several ambulances with this motor that are doing well

i would be interested to see how tuners will improve the drive ability from stock tuning.

Love mine. I’d buy it again for sure. Got a few coworkers with the 6.7 and they are shocked my truck runs as good as it does.

Too many thirty second google experts and YT engineers get listened to and believed.

Funny how no matter the subject if you look for darkness, you’ll find it.

So . . . you are not looking to tune the 7.3 but rather the transmission and throttle programming.

I'm interested but this isn't something that I want to be an early adopter for. The 7.3 is programmed to run basically stoich all the time, that leaves a fair amount of power on the table with programming. You'll give up fuel mileage though.

Supposedly the Computer will do some degree of self-tune improvements automatically over time if you consistently always refuel with 93-octane non-ethanol pure gas. This seems like the easiest way to tweak the tune & achieve gains without actually tinkering with the computer directly.

While there is some built-in adjustment to the factory computer (search octane adjustment ratio or OAR on Google), it doesn’t provide the level of gains that the Ecoboost engines do by switching to 93.

The gains on 87 from an aftermarket tune are incredible and what I’m most interested in.

For my use, the pedal mapping and target rpm would be primary. I’d like to keep the rpms above 1.8k when pulling a slight grade.

The current mapping has the truck always fighting to upshift and keep the rpms below 1.7k, even pulling a grade. Then if you need to accelerate you have to pass 3/4 pedal before it’ll jump and downshift. Then the jump and downshift is too much, I wanted 2.3k rpm and got 4k rpm. Give me a slight downshift at 1/4 pedal please. Until then it’s auto mode with the gears locked out 8th to 55mph, 9th to 80mph and 10th >80.

Main snag is traffic, off an exit and you need to jump into a gap at 70mph and I have to basically floor it to redline to get any kind of response. And it ain’t the motors lack of power or torque.

If that makes any sense. Still thinking on a five star HPT.

I'd be interested in getting a 5star tune, mostly for trans behavior. One of the things I find most annoying is the truck's insistence of downshifting 2 gears at a time. What's the point of having a 10sp transmission if you won't use all the gears?!? But I bought a Ford extended warranty and I'm not willing to risk that investment. So I'll wait until that has expired before I seriously consider getting a tune.
