Tachometer stopped, tranny doesnt shift
1993 Ford F-350 Diesel (not turbo) CrewCab 4x4
Hit a bump and my tach went dead. Furthermore, overdrive is off and can't be engaged, worse if I start out in drive it feels like the truck starts in high gear so I have to manually shift in to 1st or 2nd. No difference between 1st or 2nd either.
Bottom line: I think I've got an electronic tranny control problem, but don't have a repair manual - wire harness / connector going into top of gear selector is seated - any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Found the answer:
The tranny was operating in failsafe (2speed) due to a blown fuse feeding power to the 'computer'. The fuse was not under the dash, but rather in the power distribution center under the hood.
The diagnosis was assisted by the fact that the computer would not give out any status codes - indicating that it was either dead or not fed.
Looking back on my trip to Baja, there was evidence of how this happened.
1) road had a stiff drop off and this was the 'bump' that caused the tach and tranny to go dead.
2) later in the journey at night when chasing after a race truck in the baja1000 I encountered a strange phenomena - the lights would go very bright when the road was a certain bumpiness.
This was later found to be due to the ground terminal of the battery having come loose. My guess is that it was loose during the day and the bump leaving the road caused a surge which blew the fuse to the 'computer'
All is well now with the new fuse.

Congrats on the fix, Baja Aha,
Wish I hadn't missed your original post. You did a good job of tracking it down.
If you want, I could send you some diagnostic stuff for the E4OD in case it gives you fits again. Has a newly re-vamped TPS/FIPL test and adjustment procedure thanks to member, RxF.
You have your "receive email" function turned off in your "profile" so I can't send you an email and you can't email me as you haven't posted enough.
The board administrators could help you get the email enabled. R.A.

I've updated my settings so that my email is not private - it would be great to get the info on the tranny.
Your guidance on another thread (something about FIPL out of adjust actually gave me some hints).

Garlicbreath,
I sent you a private FTE email yesterday regarding how you can get the zip file from me. If you've deleted it by mistake, please let me know and I will re-send the message and instructions. R.A.
