91 f250 starter replacement help

Hey all, I’m attempting to replace my starter today and I’ve never done it before. Any tips recommendations and advice from anyone that’s replaced a starter on these older 250s would be appreciated. Thanks

7.5 L 8 cyl. Already got the replacement and it looks like bolt pattern lines up. I went with a beefy-er option because of the 8cyl.

Make sure to take the cable off the starter solenoid before taking it off the starter, extra precaution. Should be straight forward unbolt and replace.

I didn’t use any, not sure many do on starter wire. Is open and would collect dirt quick!

I agree with @90project5.0

You don’t need dielectric grease to install a starter. Clean, tight connections are what matter.

Dielectric grease is often misused in automotive wiring because it’s non-conductive.
It’s meant to seal and protect connections after metal-to-metal contact is made, not to improve conductivity.
Slathering it on terminals can actually cause poor contact if the connection isn’t solid.

If the cables are clean and tight, run it. Grease is just extra protection, not a requirement.

You'll find the bolts tight and ignorant to get out
I use wobbly sockets, flex sockets and extensions on some, and short wrenches and big strength on the others

I would disconnect the battery.

Knowing how old the cables are, it would not be a bad idea to replace the power and ground cables. Something larger in diameter too.

What did you buy? The OEM version is more than enough to start the engine.

What is that for? You aren’t connecting wires together at a harness

A power master performance starter. There is only one connection on the trucks currently and it looks like there’s supposed to be two for the new starter. Can’t I just run it straight to the positive terminal on the starter?

also bad news. Bolt on the old starter would not come out. A nut gave me insane trouble so will try again tomorrow.
need advice o n the starter connection. It’s odd my current setup seems to only have one wire to it. No?

Use a wrench on the ratchet to give more leverage. I had to on my lower bolt. As for the starter wires, you only have one. The power wire. If you got one that needs a second wire, it has the solenoid on it. That’s the wrong type. Post a pic of what the new one is for verification.

the piece on the FENDER gets the second, smaller wire.

I think '92 was the first year that got the gear reduction starter, which required two wires.

One wire is normal, it's grounded through the block. The wires are holding you back more than the starter is.
