Question Shift-on-the-fly 4WD question...

so what would happen if I were to switch on the 4WD when I was going down the highway at 75 MPH? Would it just wait until I hit 50MPH, and then engage it? It would it blow up the transfer case and make my Expy do a somersault?

Anybody care to experiment for me?

IF all is working correctly, it will not engage the shifters at all until the truck is within the design parameters. Like you can't engage 4L without going into neutral. I have shifted from 2w to A4w at 75mph and to 4H at 65 with nary a glitch while rallying. No problem. If it will, it will without fuss. If it won't it won't without fuss.

Now, shifting to 4H at more than 65 mph I just dont' know because I haven't done it, but what should be different than 65? Both are legal speeds in some parts of the country, and that's what it is designed for, plus a safety margin.

Matt, a guy on another forum asked the same question AFTER doing in his truck at around 65 mph....he was worried that he might have wrecked the whole drive train system even though the truck "seemed" fine after the incident. The consensus was, like tsdrallyer said, if the system allowed the front shaft to engage, then there would be no harm done, however, the system is supposed to have safeguards to prevent engagement at speeds above 50 or 55 (whatever the max speed is). A few of the other respondees said they had done the same thing too, all mistaking the 4WD selector for the AC control ****....I could see that happening.

I also hit the wrong **** once and then put three strips of tape over the shifter ****, one on top of the other, so I could tell the difference immediatelly by feel. I've got radios and GPS and other stuff over the console in front of the dash so I can't see the ***** well, though I can reach them easily.

Well, here's my thoughts... (which aren't always linear!!)

No offense to women, but I could see a few women changing drive modes accidentally over 50mph all the time... I did it once on accident and nothing happened - If it could mess up your truck I think ford would have a ton more warranty issues with it.
