Pinging When Cold
I have a 98 Expe with 96K miles. new plugs / wires / fuel filter. In the last 30 days it will ping like mad when its cold when using 87 octane but when using 93 octane it runs normal. I have tried Sea foam and injector cleaner every other oil change. Once it warms up on 87 octane is gos away for the most part. Could this be some kind of retard timing issue when cold or is it the carbon in the intake.??
thanks in advance
Mike
I have the same "mad" pinging for about two to three minutes only after really cold nights. It then goes away, I have 109k on my 98 XLT. I still get the ping during the 35 to 45 mph cruising then hard acceleration thing, but I will be doing the plug change soon. I've cleaned my MAF and the intake but I still get the pinging in the morning.
Good luck, Phil
I have a 98 Expedition with the same problems.Put new wires, plugs and temp sensors in still the same problem was there.Took it by my local Ford Garage and they hooked it up to Computer. They reset and tweaked some settings and it went away.Good luck.

Mine is doing this too.. I think it's from the low octane gas.. it didn't do it when I was using premium. I bet they altered GMCC's pcm to change timing down for 87 octane... I always though it was programmed for 87 octane.
