ABS not working, buzzing sound instead
Back again with another question for you all as I get my van ready for a cross coutry trip.
I noticed in the snow that when I brake hard, the ABS does not engage, and instead what I hear is a buzzing sound coming from somewhere. Seems like maybe near the brake pedal or in the engine bay, hard to tell. No typical pulsing of the brake pedal. I looked outside and can see the wheels lock up.
I once had a an ABS light come on, but my mechanic cleared it, saying something like "I'm not sure why it's not acknowleding ABS." It hasn't come back since.
Any thoughts on what would cause this? Van is a 2006 E250 EB 4.6.
You need the correct year FORD WORKSHOP MANUAL to diagnose properly (that and a scan tool).

The buzzing / ratcheting noise should be the solenoids in the HCU operating
You "can see the wheels lock up"? soon after that they unlock and the process repeats
The wheels do lock up and unlock faster than you can see generally
Try it on ice, see if it will brake straight, I think yours are working from what you are saying
There is some ABS testing in the book, I'd have you read through some of that about operation and testing
Do some of the testing, read about uncommanded operation and do some of that testing
I will double check, maybe I can get a video next time. I am used to a pulsing feeling in the brake pedal when ABS engages. I don't feel that, I just hear this buzzing sound. The wheels looked totally locked up to me, but I'll double check. The snow melted, so I won't be able to to it again until the next storm.
What book are you referring to? The Ford Workshop Manual?
