I just read Fritz's 2023 post about a Baldwin B7379 causing moaning and metal on a magnetic drain plug.
is that a widespread problem? I have 4 Baldwin filters and I would like to use them but now, im having second thoughts. Ive also read about some having the typewriter tick. These all appear to be 2019 and earlier 6.7. Mine is a 21 with the newer style 2 stage oil pump.
just dont want to kill the 6.7.
Thanks.
I've used them on my '20 XLT, with none of the symptoms reported. I've since moved on to using Donaldson filters, as I typically get a decent deal on them in multi-paks.
I have used the Baldwin, Donaldson and the PPE; I have tried the Baldwin and Donaldson on my 16, 17, 21 and 24. The Baldwin did cause the moaning on all 4 of mine. I do not get that with the Donaldson or now the PPE (only used on my 24). The Baldwin is a damn good filter, and lots of folks use them with great results. I was never worried about oil starvation because of the bypass opening at 20 psi. However, I did worry a bit about the loading on the Baldwin as it holds significantly less in terms of aggregate captured contaminants than the Donaldson and PPE. I felt that a 3000 to 4000 OCI would be necessary with Baldwin versus 5000 with the Donaldson and 7500 for the PPE simply due to its large size. To be transparent, I change, my oil at 5000 miles regardless. I quit using the Baldwin, not because it doesn't filter (it filters damn good), but because of the noise and I didn't want to change my oil at less than 5000 miles.
I would not hesitate to use the Baldwin. You aren't going to damage your engine at all, especially with a single filter. Just run a UOA and verify.
Now I run the PPE in the late Spring through Fall and Donaldson in the Winter. I only do this because the Donaldson has an 11-psi LR bypass and 17-psi HR bypass versus 31-psi for the PPE. I'm probably being too cautious, but in colder weather I just don't feel like risking things with the oil.

I have a 2019 and been running the baldwins for probably about two years now. I have run 10w30, 15w40 (conventional and synthetic) and 5w40, I haven't noticed any change in operation in any capacity. No moaning, groaning, cold start delay, doom glitter or slowed response in the dummy gauge reading oil pressure (I timed it when I first got the filter just to be safe). OCIs will run between 5000-8800 miles depending on use. No issues in 45k or so miles of use.
As far as capacity, here is a great thread on the internals of the filters.
I am one who had the typewriter tick after switching to the Baldwin. I ran a full oci on it and have since gone back to the motorcraft filter. I haven't had the tick reoccur since changing. I only have 1000 miles on this change, but the tick was apparent immediately with the Baldwin filter and slowly went away the more miles I put on it. Mines a 2016. Obviously not everyone has experienced this.
Add me to the list of Baldwin typewriter tick as well. Normally right after a fresh oil change, I get a very slight typewriter tick for 2-3 seconds after starting engine but with the Baldwin the typewriter tick wouldn't go away was very pronounced, so after a week of running that filter, I replaced it with a Motorcraft and the tick went away.
