I’m going to assume you’re working on the D50 TTB. It should be embossed on the bottom of the differential.
Auto hubs need a special hub socket. I’ll post a pic below. As JS30 said, the lock ring can get buried in grease.
If swapping to manual hubs, you’ll also need the manual hub wheel nuts, two nuts with a center lock ring. You will need the socket for the nuts as well.
Torque king 4x4 is a good source and has a great website just for looking up parts and tools.
Good advice for checking the the drop bracket hardware, but be careful. The nut plates on top of the engine mount are 30 yrs old. If you’re in a rust prone area, there’s a chance they are rusty. You don’t want to break one of those nut plates and have it free spinning. There is not much room to work under the oil pans. With any luck, your engine leaked some oil on there and preserved them. They sit in a recessed area, they collect dirt etc.
Auto hub socket on LH. It has rounded corners to fit inside the hub. A regular 2 3/4” socket (RH) will not fit inside the hub.
Manual hubs wheel nuts and lock ring. You will also need a set of snap ring pliers to remove the axle shaft thrust washers and circlip.
That little keeper got me when I did my front-end last month. I didn't know about it and everything I looked at showed the double spindle nuts for manual hubs which is what I have. Turns out when the previous owner had it changed from auto locking hubs to manual the shop didn't use the double nuts. They left the original nut and keeper in place then used the inner ring of the auto hub to hold the keeper in place. There was actually nothing holding the keeper in place but grease and luck. I knew the previous owner and remember him having the manual hubs done. The receipt was in the glove box and sure enough the new spindle nuts weren't on the receipt.
Hey thanks yall! I'm a Chevy boy myself & yall are helping me to flaten my Ford Learning Curve! We're not in the rust belt in central Mississippi...this is actually a pretty nice truck even though it hasn't had much luv!
