Difficulty in snow

We had our first major snow storm up here this past weekend ( about 18" here ). I have a very steep driveway and anytime I went up it, the X really struggled to make it, wheels were spinning. I was in 4 High and tried to manually lock the hubs ( just in case ) and it made no difference. It seems fine in 4X4 on the street, just does not like my driveway. For comparison, I have had two Expeditions and both would make it up the same driveway without any trouble. Is the extra weight of the X the problem or should I have the 4X4 system looked at ? Tires ? I have the stock Firestones on there.

Thanks

I don't know for sure - but I think I've read on this site that the stock tires are not very good in the snow.

Maybe someone else can back me up on this........

Exclamation Tires

My vote is tires..

The Steel X's appear not to self clean due to the closed outside tread design. In fact I'm in the market to replace mine with something a bit more aggresive. The OEM tires are a good general match for almost everyone.. unfortunately not everyone has to deal with snow 5 months out of the year..

As for the Expedition. I also had one (1999) that I ran for 150k, I loved the AWD transmision in the snow, kind a wished the X had the same set-up. But alas the new design (Expedition) has gone mini-van... Overall, I like the X better.....

Ford should support dealers to set up tires, as policy for actual operating areas rather then just taking the OEM off the line... to simple a solution!

If anything

The added weight SHOULD help you. more weight means More downforce and traction. Its your tires.

Thumbs up 2003 tires

My new 2003 X has a pretty aggressive tread on the Goodyear tires that it came with from the dealer. Also, added weight to the rear and pumped up the airbags. Grips like flies on .......

Both Expy's had GoodYear, but I cannot recall which ones. The X has the stock Firestones. I went out and looked at the tires and the snow has filled up all the treads. So looks like the tires are the culprit. Anyone have any recommendations for a good all season tire that will be good in the snow ? Thanks for all the help guys.

That is what I thought as well, but was also thinking it has to pull that added weight up the steep driveway.

Get some real tires. I would imagine they are your limiting factor.

I don't know why people hate those Firestone tires
I have gone through 3 feet of snow with my X and never
had a problem
Also, my driveway is no picnic,
very steep and has a sharp turn about half way up and have
never had a problem
maybe it's just me

Going down the road came upon a big RV towing a Ford Explore.

The sign in the back window of the Explore said.

Stay back at least two car links
vehicle has Firestones tires.

My 03 came with E rated BFG Rugged Trail (or is it rough trail?). Seem like good tires so far.

I just had my Xpsd in the snow last weekend for the first time. We had 30" here in MA. I towed my snowmobile trailer during the storm and was surprised how nice the X went thru the snow. It has brand new OEM steelx's for tires. I also have a 2000 F350 v10 with brand new OEM steelx's on it and the F350 does not go thru the snow as good as the X imo
