Auto hub replacement
First question this truck is mainly used for driving into the mountains and the 4x4 is mainly needed for snow conditions on paved or fire roads. If I install manual hubs can I drive at highway speeds with the hubs engage and the transfer case disengaged? (I don't wan't to have to get out and disengage the hubs on the side of the highway until I can get to an exit)
Second question, is there a good site that describes how to swap out the hubs and/or how to clean the auto hubs?
I just went through the hub cleaning process on mine. Mine would sometimes engage, sometimes not, and then they would sometimes refuse to disengage -- making a clicking sound while moving until they finally released.
When I removed mine they were packed with grease. This was apparently preventing them from sliding back and forth to engage. I removed them, disassembled them, and then thoroughly cleaned them in a parts washer. I then soaked them in transmission fluid and reinstalled. No more trouble.
Apparently whoever packed the bearings previously also packed the hubs. I probably would have done the same had I not researched it a little. I'll bet that this happens a lot.
Yes, you can drive normally with manual hubs locked, no problems.
