Np208 shift fork plastic inserts
i am in the process of rebuilding my np208 transfer case. The shift for and planetary gear went bad, I replaced the planetary but the shift fork as a problem. I bought one used with little wear from a shop but the plastic inserts don’t fit. To my knowledge at some point they updated this design and gave it notches in the shift fork to accept these plastic inserts. Mine doesn’t have that. Would I be able to get away with cutting these notches in the shift fork or should I just use this shift fork bare?
Also try online places that sell kits to rebuild the transfer case, may need to call them to see if the pads will be the right ones.
Years ago I had to buy some for a BW T18 transmission but I cant remember who I got them from.
I Googled "NP205 shift fork pads" and came up with this https://www.google.com/search?q=np+2...client=gws-wiz

edit I see I did NP205 and not 208 so this is what I got for 208 https://www.google.com/search?q=np+2...t=gws-wiz-serp

Yes, many NP208 transfer case shift forks have plastic inserts, especially the range shift fork in Chevy and GMC applications from 1981-1988. However, some applications, particularly older Ford and Jeep models, may use a cast iron fork that requires no inserts. When purchasing replacement parts, it is crucial to confirm if the specific model requires inserts to ensure compatibility.
- Chevy and GMC (1981-1988): The range shift fork for these models is designed to use plastic inserts.
- Ford and Jeep (older models): Certain Ford and Jeep NP208s use a cast iron range fork that does not have plastic inserts.
- Upgraded parts: Some updated or replacement forks might be sold as a complete kit that includes the inserts, even if the original part did not have them.
- Important consideration: It is always best to verify the specific application before purchasing a replacement part, as some forks are not designed to use inserts.
