With no more FL-1A oil filters on my garage shelf and contemplating an oil change, I went online to see if there were any good deals to be had. I usually buy several at a time.
Started seeing a bunch of forum posts (other forums) about the FL-1As being junk after an engineering change. Equivalent to Fram.
Other than dig to the bottom of the reports, I just ordered four WIX 51515 filters.
Anyone heard about the demise of the venerable FL-1A?
I dont know the Wixx number I used on my 300 but I found the oil drain back valve did not work so good even for over night.
Last change I went with the FL-1A and have been vary happy with it as I have not had any "bearing knock" on startup even sitting for a week.
Now you tell me they have gone the way of the "orange can of death" that I will never use if I can help it.
I found on my 02 Dodge with a 5.9 when running the Fram filter after a short time the oil PSI would be low even at highway speed NOT GOOD!
And it was not just once as I had the oil changed at the dealer where I got it done most of the time for free and never seen the PSI low.
I then went back to the quick change and the Fram filter and again low PSI so never again with a Fram filter.
I hope the FL-1A does not go the same way

Did he say why they were junk?
With the Fram I think the media failed and hurt oil flow and not even the bypass would open and why the low PSI at highway speed / RPM.
I have not had that problem when any of the dealers filters just never looked to see what they were as I dont think they were Dodge filters but who knows?
Now I did the last oil change myself, never again on this truck it was a BIG MESS and hard to get to the filter.
But I use top of the line Wixx and have not seen the low PSI at speed / RPM so I do believe the Fram's are junk and will never use them.
BTW the truck has 297,000 miles so it has had many oil changes since new from the dealer.

I get my FL-1A from Walmart, I just walked out and checked. The one posted in post 5 looks like whats been working fine for me since the last oil change.
I took the Fram off after the last change 2 years ago, because I felt the anti-drain back valve failed. Had that knocking noise on start up. That stopped after replacing the Fram with a FL-1A. I do use Fram on my 24' Subaru. It's on the second one currently, no issues.
If the Subaru filter is like the one in my wife's 2013 Subaru it is the size of a kids sippy cup if that big I think it is a joke of a filter.
I dont know what is on the wife's as I only go under the hood when she tells me some light is on and she takes it to someone to change oil.
Oil changes on it are something stupid like 10k between them. I hate the car but she likes it so she is happy.

Yes, there are some small filters out there. The filters on a lot of cars are small over the past few decades. If you are suspect about the filter, you can send an oil sample off to Blackstone Labs. FWIW, I've been doing much longer oil changes on cars for many years now. After results from Blackstone Labs.
I understand with synthetic oil that her car uses you can go longer and I guess even with EFI as the motor should run cleaner so cleaner oil but being old school every 3K or as close to it as I can it gets changed in all my junk LOL
Dave ----
Yeah, it took me a while to trust the longer oil changes too. If I drove my truck more, like you, I'd stick with your plan.
FWIW, my 2005 Legacy GT, on Amsoil and their filters, on a turbo motor (with bigger turbo) tuned at 21psi, I sent a sample in at 7,000 miles, they told me to leave that oil in for 2000 more miles and send in another sample. I began doing oil changes up to, before 9000 miles. That engine saw redline weekly for over 154,000 miles.
I change my 2000 Lexus every 10k miles. But i run that 20k mile oil and filter combo. At 268k miles i have no problems with it. But i started by checking the oil every 1k miles after the 1st 5k. Really not even dirty until 7-8km
Now that I am retired I really dont drive any of mine vary far, maybe the 07 CV once a week on a 50 mile round trip to take wife to the doctor, so I call that city driving and why I stick to the 3k change.
Dave ----
FWIW, I use the three changes every 10,000 miles. Technically it's every 9,999, as I use the Masonic method of every 3,333 miles.
That way every time you see 3333 or 6666 or 9999 on the last 4 whole mile odometer cylinders your oil change is due. That's my guideline but I do record the actual mileage in the log book at the hot drop oil change day. That's right drop your oil hot! I found that the Harbor Freight heavy duty disposable gloves work well for that operation. A little skill is needed holding the drain plug up in the hole till unthreaded and then a smooth move to the side makes for a pretty clean getaway.

This is exactly how I always plan to do it. But I always drop the plug into the oil receptacle for some reason.
