If you reset it every tank it will be way off. Most guys here reset every time, and they all complain how worthless the overhead is. Leave it alone and it will show your true average (thats why it says AVG MPG). Thats what I do and am rarely off more than a couple of tenths. Now obviously if you use a tank to tow your 12000 lb trailer, and hand calculate your mileage it will be way off. But if you include that towing tank in with the rest of your tanks, then it will be correct.
It is my understanding that you need to re-set after every fill up. To date with my v-10 and now the 6.0 it is accurate within .9 tenths, plenty good for what it is intended for…an estimation.
After you fill up, turn key to ing. on, don’t start
Push both buttons on the overhead for maybe 3 seconds
When you are in the average mode
It will clear and then start going up on mpg as soon as you drive out of the station
Thanks I'll try it. Mine seems to be stuck around 13.2 or .4 got it pretty loaded up for work though so I don't feel to bad for moving 5 tons of truckaround.
If you don't reset it everytime it is going to be giving you the average miles per gallon from when you got the truck. Not accurate at all. I reset mine and check it by hand everytime the overhead is only off by .5 at the most.

Again, if you reset every tank your NOT checking your AVERAGE MPG, your checking that tank. If you don't reset you are actually checking your trucks AVERAGE MPG, which is far more accurate than what your truck gets over a particular tank.
well you are gonna get different mpg for towing and unloaded. And who cares what my overall average is. I want to know what I'm getting at the time I'm towing, not towing or whaen it is cold or hot, etc etc.

Well, I care. It will easily show a trend without necessarily having a performance decrease. I had that exact situation happen to my Lincoln. Over about a 2 week period my avg went down about 1.5 mpg. It had over a 100k on it so I decided to change the plugs and wires. Within a week my average was back up to normal. All that without any noticeable performance change. Oh well to each his own, thats why they make them resettable, so both you and I can choose how we want to keep track of it.
The only way it'd be accurate if you never reset is if you calculated total gallons used since new or last rest agains the total mileage for the same. Useless info for me. I want to know what I'm getting on that tank.
It can be reset while the truck is started too, BTW. My overhead optimist tends to be about 1-1.5mpg high so I just look at it for trends.

Well, mines accurate within a couple of tenths, I wonder which method is more accurate?
