OD Tranny

I believe the Tx and OD in my 57 F-100 is not what came with the truck at birth. Can anyone help me with IDing the Tx and OD. For those of you with a 49/59 illustrated parts catalog (Ford Cars) the picture on page 196 (52/54 Ford, 55 T-Bird) is identical to my OD. The OD has the following info cast on it's case. R10F-1A on top of W.G.DIV. Also cast on the OD is (55E. This is on the bottom driver's side edge. The tranny has the number (TAAA-7222-A). The(T) may be a 7, it's hard to read. The tranny is a side loader with a rectangle side plate. Can anyone tell me the year of the Tranny & OD, What models it could have come from, and the manufacturer of the Tranny and OD. Thanks Chuck Heinz

The numbers on the tranny don't ring any bells, but as you describe it, it's a common Ford 3 speed tranny. The O.D. # indicates the run of the mill regular Borg-Warner R-10 unit. That tranny/OD combo was used in the ford cars from 50 to 55 and probably in the PUs from 53 to 55. The big block cars and PUs used the HD BW T-85 tranny with the BW R-11 OD unit affixed to it. The '56 and up T-birds also used the T-85/R-11 combo. Brian G. NY

The only true ID is the metal tag which should be under a RR upper case bolt. This well tell the original application.

The case casting is correct for a 57 but is generic across 1954-64.

The reason the number was not ringing bells is because 7222 is the cover casting number rather than the trans. case number. The generic trans. case number should be 7006. I don't believe the flat bottom side cover tranny was used with the O.D. after '55 altho it was used as a straight 3-spd. up thru '62 or so. In '56 Ford went to a BW 4 bolt cover top loader 3 speed for use with the small block O.D. which, by the way, was not half the tranny the earlier one was. Fotunately, a few years later Ford began using another BW toploader (6-bolt) with their small block O.D.s. This is a good one! Sometime around '56 the mainshaft dia. on Heinz' side cover style tranny was increased making an already good tranny even better. Brian G. NY
