I drove 2WD for 40 years never ever "needed" 4WD, and I live in Northern IL at the WI border. Then again I was taught how to drive RWD from the beginning so that makes a huge difference too. If you never plan to see snow or sand or mud, then your first choice will work, but as others mentioned, resale is a BEECH. I mention this because once you get the big rig bug, and you will, you will want to go to a 5th wheel, then you will need a bigger truck. My suggestion, go with an F350. You gain more payload for the same drive. Gas or diesel thats solely your choice, either works fine, but going to an F350 takes away the chances of not having enough truck when that bug bites.
If OP’s dealership has a new 2WD on the lot (a Lariat at that), then he probably lives in a very southern state where a lot of people actually do want and choose 2WD vehicles. If I lived in a gulf state, or the southwest, I would most likely choose a 2WD as well.
I think you're in the drastic minority with your comments on the 7.3L being dog slow. I'm not sure what that means either because my dog is pretty fast... But how many gas Super Duty owners ever even research a super charger, much less pull the trigger? They are different power plants, the 7.3 and the 6.7 but there's really no need to tune either one of them - not for the standard truck driver towing the standard camper/trailer.
1/4 mile in the 16’s, is slow comparatively to any F150, which I clearly qualified in my post. The extreme torque management isn’t magical either.
Not looking for a race car, just something that can pass in a safe manner.
Even supercharged…..to not be as fast as my last stock f150, was not okay with me.
Just an opinion, no need to defend or rebut.
The takeaway here is I find the diesel
completely satisfactory, with a basic tune.

I bought a 2026 F250 Lariat, 6.7, 3.31 locker, upfitter switches, chrome pkg, spray in liner, FX4, Oxford White with Baja. Pretty much the same truck as my 2023 PB, which I love. They have the same name. Moby - the white whale.
MSRP was $82455 - $5419 discount + $2298 tax + $78 title + 799 doc = $80211 OTD.
There was a similar 2025 for 2k less, but I didn't like the Carbonized Gray with black interior as well as the Oxford White and Baja.
This will tow whatever I want to tow around, plus the heated/ventilated seats are super nice down here in the south. I've also dreamed of power fold mirrors for years, the dreaming is over, it's now reality!
I watch a YT channel of some full timers. They have a 3500 Chevy 2WD. They were in Nevada last week boondocking and got stuck in loose sand on a pretty well maintained road. I was thinking that is the exact road that I would have had no issue going down in a 2WD
Maybe the 4WD is worth it.
