Towing 10k, WD hitch needed?

Hi folks,
Buddy of mine just bought an 03 F350 LB 4x4 XLT v10 .. lives in CA and is moving out here (SC). Plans to put another truck he needs to bring out here (F250 XL work truck, '95 I think) on a trailer along with other moving stuff, estimates the whole shootin match to be about 10k.
All my experience is towing campers, had a "bumper pull" which I used WD w/ sway control (with a previous, smaller truck) and then all 5th wheels. I'm trying to steer him the gooseneck route for a trailer (he needs to buy one) but I think those are more expensive, and he's looking at a tow behind.
He's asking if WD is necessary. I say yes but I don't have any experience with our Super Dutys towing anything "bumper pull". I also think he needs the sway control. What do you guys say?

For the price they sure save a lot of unneeded grief. I'd put one on. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

If this were a bumper pull, needing WD would be a no-brainer. The thing about a car hauler is that you have ultimate control over tongue weight by how you position the vehicle. But you have to be mindful of sway dangers if you get that tongue too light. Using a WD would be the safest thing, but you have to choose a trailer that is compatible, and not all car haulers will be easily fitted up with the WD. If he is looking at new trailers, then the dealer should be able to guide the decision. If buying used, you'll have to figure it out on your own.

The hitches on these trucks are only rated for 6,000/600 without the WD. So I think you need one.

That's some key info I didn't think about ... I'm fairly sure he's looking used. I agree that for the money it really saves aggravation. Especially for a cross-country haul.

Thanks guys! I'll kindly suggest WD is the way to go...
