I’m working on my project this weekend. I’m cleaning up the steering shaft for paint.
I need a new rubber boot for the universal joint. I saw a post once where they used a cv joint boot off of something? I can’t find it. Does anyone remember which cv joint boot fits this?
I have not looked at mine to see what this boot is you talk of as I dont remember a boot?
Got a picture of where this boot fits?
It may also remind someone of something that may work.
edit:
You talking about this one in the lower right corner?
Sorry to say I got nothing but it would have to be from something small if it was a axle CV joint.

as I recall it was from a small front wheel drive car?
im not sure how to install it either?
I have the joint apart and the female side cleaned up but not the shaft end yet. I’ll clean the shaft tonight and send pics.

the universal joint ( not sure the proper name) right below the steering column in your pic.
They make split CV boots that the open edge glues together. Maby see if your friendly local parts store might have any that may be close to the shaft size, and you can cut the small end off and use it.

Thing is most will want the year / make & model of the car to look up the part as they dont get to know cars & trucks like back in the day.

On the bottom universal, on my 86 F250 there is a splash shield over it. Almost looks like a small flower pot. I had my steering shaft out recently and I remember it has a hole in the top for the shaft. Just slides up and down the shaft. It is kinda fragile so they probably get lost or broken. Might be why you're missing yours.
Being you would have to see if they would work or not, the same for the $5 to $7 shock boots I would go for the cheaper shock boot and make work.
The opening for the shock shaft top is not that large and with a few cuts and a wire tie would hold onto the steering shaft.
The part that fits around the shock body is about the same size as the large part of the steering shaft.

I been meaning to look up the boot they sell for Chevrolets, I know I replaced that same boot on my Belair as they make it, if its the same dimensions I might be able to use it on mine as I am going to disassemble mine to clean it up to paint it and then regrease the joint.
I’ll see how or if this completely comes apart this weekend. I know the boos I saw was for a Honda or some small car. It was a one piece deal . Clamped around the outer part of the bell and clamped around the shaft.

On the OE shafts you lift that collar in the middle up and you can then pull the two pieces out enough to get the spring out carefully and separate. Its the only way youll get the boot on if you find one to retrofit. On my Belair it was a solid one piece shaft there was no way to do it so I bent the reproduction one all up forcing it to fit over the square pivot ends to get it onto the shaft.
I havent been really looking but since this friday I will be throwing the original 446 and 2 back on my firewall im getting to that stage of reassembly which means I need to disassemble and clean the steering shaft for paint so I need to start looking for options on the boot. Its a shame that they dont make the modern U-joint shaft but with the OE rag joint. They make them like that for Chevrolet`s but they dont make it for Fords, only a U joint at both end which results in feeling every bump in the road in the steering wheel.
~Update~
This might be of some help, I was browsing and I found this rebuild kit for the '73-'79 trucks. I have a strong feeling that boot is the same diameter and will fit on our joints, sadly youll have to fork over $50 for the whole repair kit to get just the boot as the boot isnt sold separate. You could even swap over the outer housing that has the fold over ears but personally I would keep the fold over ears. I sent them an email though asking if they could possibly tell me the OD of the boot at the joint housing so I can compare it to mine, I dont think Ford would have changed the size though.
