Hey fellas I need some guidance if you have a minute or two. Can an IDM go bad but the truck still sorta run? That’s where we’re at currently….
A good friend of mine has a 2002 F250 CCSB 190k miles, 4x4 that is giving him fits.
Major loss of power while towing. Truck died at low speed requiring tow. Truck will start, run and drive now but not reliably.
We have Forscan and the icp/ipr values look great. Buzz test passes great, UHVC gaskets are Motorcraft and they look perfect. CPS is new Motorcraft grey—we’ve swapped it with other known good ones. 42 pin harness looks great no chaffing of wires that we can tell. Steady fuel pressure as well. Fuel level is at half tank. Oil is full. Ebpv has been deleted.
Unknowns are hutch mod, injectors are reman from an unknown source. IPR is new but I don’t know if it’s motorcraft or not. Previous owner fired the parts cannon—yup.
Injectors 3 and 5 failed contribution test. Swapped this injectors out with two more (oem unknown mileage/shape) and it ran good for a decent amount of time.
What am I missing? Please advise any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Andrew

Those injectors sound sus to me, but if his fuel level dropped below 1/4 when the problemos started it also could be a broken pickup foot. That fixes itself eventually when the tank is refilled and the air purges out.
Thanks fellas I appreciate the help. We checked fuel pressure and it was a steady ~65psi revving it up in the driveway but we did not check it under load. That was using the fuel drain on the filter as a test port as the truck does not have a fuel pressure gauge.
It’s not fun but at this point I think it’s worth dropping the tank and getting a close eye on the fuel pickup as that is a big unknown.

Doesn’t sound like fuel pressure is the problem then. Although the foot/umbrella that presses against the bottom of the tank being broken is a separate issue that only causes trouble when taken well below 1/4 tank and starts to suck air into the system. That will cause very poor running and loss of power accompanied by a lot of blue smoke at the tailpipe until the air purges out, which can take longer than you’d think it should.
I did not mention it does pull soft codes for ICP being ‘above or below desired pressure’. A few for ebpv as well but that been deleted so I’m not thinking those codes are relevant.
We’ve done many test runs with it running poorly and the ICP and IPR (via Forscan) are right where they need to be or so it seems..

To answer your previous question……. Just because the truck runs does not rule out the IDM!!!
My truck had no DTC’s, Hooked up AE, buzz test did great, changed all the suspect: CPS, IPR, UVCH, checked /unplugged ICP.
Truck would die, but would restart, would miss, would buck, would run on one bank, then straighten out and run fine for 2 or 3 days, then start all over again.
It was the IDM!!! It had an intermittent short (open), no rain, no water leakage. It is not that uncommon, though unusual…… just ask one of the IDM rebuilders.
