Trans filter/fluid change
Trans filter/fluid change
So I changed my transmission filter and fluid yesterday from a pan drop standpoint. Ended up taking about 13 quarts on the refill. I did pretty much follow PTT’s instructions as to how to do it, but was surprised that it took 13 quarts to refill. Truck has 35,000 miles about half of that towing my fifth wheel and I’m always keen on doing maintenance early so I figured what the heck. Wasn’t too bad of a process. Took me about two hours from start to finish laying in my very comfortable gravel driveway! Used Motorcraft filter and fluid, the old fluid was a bit dark, but not overly concerning from other transmission fluid changes, I have done in the past.
I used to do something like this on my old plow truck, the 96 F250, but I had a bigger trans cooler in front and other stuff as well (overkill)

Made a stock E4OD survive plowing commercially in Buffalo lake effect storms...
In simple terms, I had a two way valve installed on the return line from the second trans cooler in the circuit back to the trans, that I would open like in above link and have my wife sit in the 96 truck, and as soon as it spit air like described, shut off truck. Add new fluid, run it some, do it again and fill for the last time. I bought two cases of NAPA ATF that was cheaper than the Mobil 1 he used but worked like charm to keep my E4OD going with all the tons of snow my truck was pushing in those parking lots.
Actually drained my own trans pan, took sample for testing, dropped pan to replace filter and clean as I went further on this fill then I actually wanted to>> meant to drop fluid last year) and used not only LubeGard Platinum additive in this fill but tried their aluminum protection additive as well.
Took some pics, of course, and will do a new thread.
