Apologies if the pictures are bad, but I want to get a ac compressor installed on my truck because I’m tired of this heat! I need some help from you ford gurus in deciding what alternator and ac compressor kit to install for a ford 302. Thanks!
EDIT: I have a dealer installed clardy ac also ive noticed that the alternator is on the driver side of the motor
Well, it looks like everything‘s been changed already.
Do you know if a different motor has been swapped in? Or just the front accessory drive system?
Did it have an AC compressor on there already?
It’s not done up as a full serpentine, it doesn’t look like. Just as a wide belt using the wide rib “serpentine style“ pulley and belt.
Looks like your original alternator adjuster bracket has been cut and modified.
It’s gonna be hard to give advice initially until we, perhaps see more pictures? Perhaps get some part numbers on things.
Best of luck though. I can’t live without A/C anymore!
Since your engine has a serpentine belt front dress means that you have a later model than what came in your truck.
Try to locate a Fox body Mustang or later for everything to mount the AC compressor. Also full size Fords from 79 and up with a 302. The smaller round style compressor is also what you will need.
to be completely honest, i dont know if the front accessory drive system was swapped in or if its a newer motor. I know for sure its a 302! the truck for sure came with ac initially, however the factory vin decoding says it was a 360. are there any specific pictures youd like?
Get some casting numbers and date codes off of the intake or other parts in order to determine what year engine you have. It’ll be easier to search for the correct compressor and brackets.
I can't help you with specifics, but be aware that some 302s with serpentine belts use water pumps that rotate backwards. If the wp pulley is smooth, it's a reverse rotation pump. If it is grooved, it turns the same direction as all the other pulleys.
Pre-85 302s with serp belt had the alternator on the left. Search pics of 1984 Crown Vic w/302 and I think you’ll see the similarities.
This is a crappy pic that I got off the interwebs but I think it shows the same alt/ps bracket:
If I'm not mistaken, the OP's setup is not a true "serpentine" even though it's using most of the components.
I don't see any idlers or tensioners, and all the pullies look like they're grooved, with the belt running in one direction only, on the ribbed side. The crank is even configured with two pullies, like some few engines, rather than just the one we normally see in most cases.
And the brackets are cobbled together in some cases. I think this may be someone's early swap over to their own version.
The engine, or at least the front cover and such, are later model, as you can see the "timing pointer" or whatever that loop is called, there on the passenger side. Most definitely late model stuff.
But with the belt going in only one direction, cobbled up mounts and brackets, there's no telling what it all came from. Or even if they all came from the same vehicle.
Looks like they even used the early (standard rotation) cooling fan so that it works with the single direction belt.
The other question is, if you use the older stuff, can you get refrigerant to charge the system? I'll be adding AC to my '67 build and it looks like I'll need to do a complete new system just because of the refrigerant requirements in place today. I don't believe the old stuff is compatible with new refrigerant.
The old evaporator and condenser will work with R134a but won't be as efficient. The special oil in an A/C system (especially in then compressor) is different between the old R12 and newer R134a. The dehydrator would have to be changed with a new one never having freon or oil in it. First, the whole system must be flushed to get all the old freon and oil out of it. Don't forget to add the newer PAG (Polyalkylene Glycol) oil.
2X Bobby. I think the whole front drive assembly off an 80 to 82ish Crown Vic would be the ticket. Try local JYs (junk yard). Now they call themselves Wrecking Yards. If they don't have everything in stock ask them to do a national search.
