Windshield Replacement

Going down the highway and we heard a VERY light tap on the windshield immediately followed by a non-reparable crack. I've never had a need to replace a windshield on any of my vehicles so I'm looking for some guidance on what to look for. My insurance doesn't have specific window coverage. I got a quote from Safelite for about $1K, of which about half of that cost is for "recalibration" of the forward looking camera. Recalibration needed? Really? How would they even do that?

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Check with your local ford dealer or many independent glass companies are cheaper. Had my 22 glass replaced at dealership by local glass company no recalibration needed. Don't remember the cost.

Thanks! I do have Adaptive Cruise so I believe that's the reason for the calibration. About $500 of the quote is for the glass replacement which seems fairly reasonable. Another $500 for recalibration seems excessive.

I have a 2020 platinum with ACC and have had 4 windshields done now(almost ready for another) and have never had the camera recalibrated. The ACC doesn’t use the camera, just radar and works fine.

edit to add: the camera is for the lane departure system.

Make sure you are getting OEM replacement windshield. I also suggest getting quotes from the dealer and independent shops. Based on various feedback I've read/heard, I think Safelite is overpriced especially when they add $$$ for recalibration services that may actually not be needed.

Safelite is one of the most expensive places.
Last glass I had replaced was a side glass, Caliber Glass had a pretty good price.
I need a windshield for mine too, looked around and could get one for about $300 without sensor recalibration and about $550 with.
I think on mine the only sensor is for the automatic wipers, so will probably not pay the extra for recalibration.

I have a 2022 with no adaptive cruise and I had to have the Ford dealership across the street from the glass shop I had my windshield done at recalibrate it. I do have lane departure warning and 360 cameras as well as the collision avoidance detection that throws up a flashing red in the middle screen between the gauges. My total replacement was $549 in 2022 so I didn't turn it into insurance.

The recalibration has nothing to do with ACC.

Always opt for OEM glass.

Can someone please clarify the real difference between OEM and after market glass? Due to travel, I still haven't replaced the glass yet (hopefully next week - this crack is very annoying!).

I've been getting quotes from several different sources and the costs are all over the place. Most recently, I contacted the auto glass company that gets the business from the local Ford dealership and they're quoting $1100 OEM vs $737 aftermarket. They say the only difference is the Ford label which kinda raises my eyebrow.

Maybe I'm just overthinking this. . . .

The OEM is acoustic glass. Who knows what the other brands are.

THIS

the Ford sound screen is a lot quieter than aftermarket windshields.

Yeah, I did notice the SoundScreen logo on my windshield so I figured the difference was sound related. Thanks!

Wow, I have a couple of dings on my windshield, 2022 F250 lariat, and did notice the symbols on the dash, I will be checking with some other glass companys other
than SafeLite..Had them scheduled to come out for two windshield jobs, "during covid". Never showed, and even billed the ins. co for one of the installs. Contacted
the insurance comp., and never heard about it again...go figure..

If you have comprehensive coverage, you have glass/window coverage. Comprehensive should cover anything safety-related, theft, vandalism, etc. Your windshield is safety-related. Believe it or not something like your turn signal stalk can be replaced under comprehensive (again, safety related, it controls your wipers, turn signals, brights).
