My 2021 F350 windshield had a horizontal crack about 8" long just below the passenger side wiper thanks to a stone that flew up on the freeway. I held off getting that repaired for over a year waiting for a "real crack" - you know the one, in front of your face.
I was dropping off my truck for service and a guy at the dealership talked to me about replacing my windshield. He was authorized by the dealership to offer windshield repair. I agreed to have him do it after he said they would use factory glass and do it at my house. They sent 2 guys to replace the windshield and a 2nd guy to do the calibration of the Adaptive Cruise Control. I don't have the price nor did they give me a breakdown splitting the glass and calibration as this was all done through my insurance.
If you have comprehensive coverage, you have glass/window coverage. Comprehensive should cover anything safety-related, theft, vandalism, etc. Your windshield is safety-related. Believe it or not something like your turn signal stalk can be replaced under comprehensive (again, safety related, it controls your wipers, turn signals, brights).
Following up to close out this chapter. . . . I lost count of how many different independent glass companies and Ford dealerships I called to get a reasonable estimate. I think the cheapest OEM glass option was around $1200'ish (total - including calibration). I ended up going with Caliber Glass for a few reasons: Their customer service was very responsive (sent me a clear, detailed quote - answered all my questions) and, contrary to some recommendations above, they convinced me their aftermarket glass did have an acoustic layer. Bottom line out the door for everything was $714.
The tech shows up right on time. Took about an hour and a half total. When it came time for calibration, he let me ride along because I was very curious. We only drove it a few blocks up to about 40mph and done.
Today I wound it up on the freeway to check the sound level. Might be my imagination, but it almost seems quieter than the original glass. Plus - it's SO clear! My prior glass (6 years old/90Kmiles) was very pitted. So far, so good.
I appreciate everyone's contributions to this discussion!
Local glass company. It's funny I had four windshields replaced in my 18 250 and never once paid for recalibration. I also never paid double for the Ford logo on same glass. Those were cash pay events.
Fast forward to my 21 450 and my insurance company began a $0 deductible glass option for a few bucks more a year. I've have had 3 windshields in the 21 450 and charged each time for recalibration and got the ford logo glass each time.
In terms of any functional differences? None whatsoever. YMMV but that is my experience with same glass company over 8 years and two vehicles that were both platinum trim level for reference.
