It is a great option - ought to be standard equipment. The alarm sounds more rapidly as you get near an object to the rear, allowing you to estimate just how close you are. It is very useful because of the increased bed height that makes it harder to see behind the truck, but it is also a great safety feature. You never know when a little one might be back there admiring just how great your new truck looks.
It can be temporarily deactivated by pushing a button on the dash for those times you are towing or are otherwise in known close proximity to an object.
The new F150 '04 bed is higher than previous yrs making visibility very poor. Reverse sensor is a most have. I only park my truck on reverse and it allows me to get as close as I can to other cars and obstacles. Believe me if I wouldn't have the reverse sensor my pickup truck will be all scratch and dent already. It is a most have, best money you can invest on your new truck.
They are nice but annoying with trailer in tow as you have to disable it to back up, or it drives you crazy. Just takes a couple clicks of a swith to turn it off though.
At first i didn't want one, but the truck that i ended up buying (had everything i wanted plus the reverse sensor) had it on and i love it. Backing up is so easy now, no second guessing how close you are to an object behind you.
if you can, get the reverse sensor. if it saves you from 1 accident, it's paid for itself big time. the only thing i ever hit with my old f150 was backing into a power swingpole on my property. what a surprise. did find out the ford is tough though.......
I've found myself getting lazy and relying on it, when I should be turning my butt around more and looking better. I'm serious- it makes you cut corners when backing up and I think that's dangerous. I'm making myself do a better job, hope you do too.

Ford isn't offering it yet as an after-market accessory, but there are companies out there that offer a similar system that can be added. I'm sure if you surf the net you'll find something.
Another option to look at is the Hitchcam . Its a small wide angled lens camera that fits in your Hitch reciever you have a small lcd in the cab with you to see out rear end.
I was looking at sensors b4 buying this i think seeing a clear view is better than hearing just beeps. Got the best ratings from consumers mag.
