1979 F250 bought new by me 11/79. Converted to 429 in 1991. I have been running fender well exit headers from L&L. They need to be replaced.
I have a PTO driveshaft running beneath the right motor mount. There are no local wrecking yards.
If i could run the right exhaust out of the engine compartment where the 351m exhaust exited, this would work. The left side is no problem.
L&L has been running me around since April. What other options are there?
Chassis exit, NO WAY NO HOW, been there done that with a 4wd 79 F150 351M auto trans, giant PITA...at least for me anyway. You know I happen to have a set of barely used (not by me) L&L 429/460 fender exit headers.... that are ELECTROLESS NICKELSHIELD PLATED. Pm me if interested.
440, the engine is a 429 pulled out of a 70 T-bird. I got it without exhaust manifolds. I have looked at 429 and 460 manifold online, but I have no idea of which years will work.
I did this swap in 1991.
There is no local wrecking yard where I could scope them out.
I am hoping someone can point me towards the correct year to use.
Well AFAIK you want to get 2wd (78/79) trucks 460 exhaust manifolds, car ones come out too short and end right right at the frame rails when you swap in a car motor. Get the real wrong one and you will be tempted or need to knotch the frame on the passenger side. The truck ones are a little bit longer and come back far enough that you can get easy eccess to the ends to connect the rest of the exhaust.
I will start looking for pics online to see how they compare. This will be winter project. I am just now putting by the finishing touches on a 30X40 shop and still need to cut 7 cords of firewood for this winter.
Has anyone else got a suggestion about what to use? My main concern is exhaust leaks, not headers vs manifolds. The only fault i have with the fender well exits is that i can no longer chain up the front end. That is probably a good thing as it keeps me out of trouble.
The manifolds off a 2wd 460 work fine. I have a set of them on my '79 F250 with a 429 and no problems at all.
Good to know that the 2wd one's work for sure, because I know the car ones DO NOT without a small frame notch on the passenger side. At least the PO of my blue truck went that route.
The 2wd 460 info is just what I was looking for. I will start looking for exhaust manifolds. I cut the first cord of this winter's heat this morning. I cannot tear the truck apart until that is all in.
The speedometer was sitting at 19999.1 when I parked in the shop after cutting wood. It will hit 120K before I get back on pavement. That may be low mileage for a 79, but the body looks pretty rough.
Who knows, L&L may surprise me yet.
Correct, I used the car ones when I put the 429 in in 1988 and I didn't want to notch the frame on the RH one so I put a dent in the pipe. when I rebuilt it last year I put the 2wd 460 one on with new exhaust and it's perfect.
