I am having an issue with my 2002 E-150 5.4L that I am hoping someone can help with. It pulled a P0455 code, gross evap leak. Additionally it also wreaks of gas at the back of the van. I plugged a smoke machine into the hose going into the Purge Valve (which was replaced a couple years ago) and smoke is coming out of the Vapor vent valve on the charcoal canister. I think this valve is supposed to be open when the vehicle is off to allow pressure to equalize. When I apply voltage to the vapor vent valve I can feel something actuating inside but the smoke continues to come out. I am trying to get a solid diagnosis about which part is bad but I'm not sure I have. Does anyone have experience trouble shooting the vapor vent valve that can share some insights?
Replace
Replace
Replace the faulty valve
Doing the pinpoint tests (for code P0455) in the 2002 PCED, will walk you down the path where the valve needs to be replaced most likely
If you are lucky, the valve will be sold separately, and not a 1000 dollar canister like the Nissans

Thanks for the reply Manic. How does one acquire the PCED for a 2002 E-Series?
The valve is relatively cheap, only $50 on Rock Auto, but I couldn't figure out how to remove it from the charcoal canister which is another $100. I was trying to be gentle with it as it is 20+ year old plastic and I needed to drive again soon, maybe a bit more aggression would get it out.
I see you're in SLC too, here is to hoping for a good snow year!
Cheapest is just to hit the library and print the pages out of the PCED in digital form on AllData
Otherwise, you buy one on EBAY for big money
Ebay item number 297422810930 is one for 54.03 (they used to be around a hundred bucks)
Agree about the snow
SLC too?
That means you are around here too?
I lived a bit north in Roy but recently moved to Marriot Slaterville
Got me some new Volkl GS skis to go tear it up on
I managed to find a slightly water damaged copy for $30 shipped on Ebay, should hopefully serve my needs.
I'm in the Sugarhouse area of SLC. Got a new board and bindings for the season that I need to get waxed. Will get some days out skiing in the backcountry and with my son but snowboarding is a bit easier on my questionable knees and a bit more fun. I'm trying to build a garage before it gets too cold so I'm hoping for a late start to winter. Lots of challenges with the city to get it started.
Sweet, ski raced for years and mostly stay away from the back country but love the backside of the bird
Good luck on the garage, I have a friend in East Layton who had to jump through a bunch of hoops too
I just moved to where the laws are a bit less strict
Love Park City, going off those gelandes at the terrain park with the youngsters is the highlight of my day when I go there
Jump after jump after jump, fun as hell, about 10 YUGE ones in a row
You'll love that PCED
I'd read the whole fuel section oner and over for a time or two
Sugarhouse, sweet, close enough to big and little cottonwood canyons
I'm just out west 12th street in Ogden, pretty close to the best kept secret Snow Basin
I get a kick out of that private resort on the backside of Farmington Peak, gated community, Deer Valley on steroids (billionaires only, not millionaires I hear)
Well the PCED proved pretty useless for this issue, just directed me to Section 303-13 of the Workshop Manual so I'll work on tracking that down. Anyone have a trustworthy source for dealer Workshop Manuals? Some of the sites seem sketchy or hard to use requiring the installation of different software.
AllData at the library has the factory FORD pages out of the manuals
They pay the expansive subscription
My library lets me print 25 pages a day free
Otherwise just buy the manuals on Ebay, cheap at times
One listing is 75 bucks + 11.90 shipping for a used 3 book set. Ebay item number 267134809723

I tried the Salt Lake City library but they didn't seem to know what AllData was and pointed me towards some Chilton's resource they had but all it had was electrical for the 2002 E-150. I'll try the county system and see if they have it. I assume your library system has AllData?
Alternatively, I was a the junkyard getting parts for a different car and picked up a canister and vent valve. I felt like this was a cheaper way to throw parts at it and if it doesn't work I can return it for credit.
You were asking about their computers, right?
The access is through "online research" and then you go into AllData
I've used Alldata on the computers at the SLC main branch library once when they first opened and was having an open house
Some library systems like in Davis County, used to have Mitchell on demand as their resource
I know Chilton does have an online resource as well, but Alldata is the one YOU want
All the library's I have visited all over the country have AllData including Maui and Boston
Good luck
Re reading your OP, I sure would give that carbon canister a good visual inspection, maybe hit it with some smoke
Not sure what "city" library you are referencing
The one on 4th South is the SL county library and should have it, I'd call the reference desk and ask them
