I have a 92 F150 that needs a new/rebuilt engine. I've been looking on line and I have found 3 options that all sound ok to me.
1. Rebuild the engine in it. I personally don't have the skill but I have friends who do and want to help.
2. Buy a crate 302 and have the engine replaced. I do try to stay accurate to the vin. The 302 is a fine engine and I have no issues with it.
3. Buy a crate 300ci I6 and have it installed. IMHO the I6 is one of the best engines ever built. I'm not trying to win races, just have a reliable truck.
There is a fourth option but it is a pipe dream (a bespoke 490, but I'm not rich so...).
What do you guys think? I'm leaning toward crate 302, but I an open to opinions and experience.
Swappng in a 6 will require a lot more parts besides the engine including a complete wiring harness and computer, engine mounts and towers, accessory brackets, a different flexplate or flywheel, a complete I6 EFI intake, and exhaust manifold and Y pipe.
Any vintage 5.0 is a direct bolt in but the best was the '94 -95 truck spec motor.
A roller cam 5.0 would be a easy upgrade. While the 300 is amazing, its a lot of work to swap, and if I was going to swap engines, I would look into a 351/5.8.
